The first thing you could do is to download start-up inspector from HERE and follow the installation instructions. When you run it, it will tell you everything that starts up with your machine. Untick anything you don't need starting, click apply and then re-boot. This should speed you up a little.

Here's an alternative way to identify and stop Startup items and processes hogging your Start. . . . . > How to determine which programs and services are loading into memory when Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition starts up . . . . . Make sure you click on the following part to the tutorial at the end of each page.

There are so many things which could be slowing down your machine. Since you seem to have done defragmenting on a fairly empty drive that's unlikely to be a problem. Other possibilities are:
1. Viruses 2. Trojans, spyware etc. 3. Anti-spyware software 4. Indexing tools 5. Virtual memory problems and VM configuration 6. Bad drivers (e.g for network interfaces)
Use a good anti-virus checker to keep viruses off your machine. If you've been doing this already you probably won't have this as a problem, but if not then you may be in a bad state.
Use tools such as Spybot S&D, Adaware, AVG Anti-Spyware, Windows Defender to check for, and clear off spyware. Some will come back, so run one or more of these at least once a week. Also Spywareblaster may help to stop some from installing.
When running, tools such as virus checkers often interfere with normal operation. They run in the background, but they can really slow things down a lot. Check the schedules, and make sure they're not running a full scan when you want to use the machine seriously. Recently some Windows XP updates seem to have put Windows Defender on to my machine, and it slowed down even further. Having one anti-virus system running will slow your machine down, but if you get two runnning at the same time it will become painfully slow.
If you use desktop search engines these can also slow your system down a lot, so turn off indexing when you want to use the machine, and only enable the search engines when you want them - don't let them come on at startup.
You don't mention what kinds of programs you are trying to run. Some programs, such as video and audio recorders and editors use very large files, and these may have an adverse effect on virtual memory and slow your machine down.
Virtual memory configuration can have an impact, though you may not get the behaviour you expect by tinkering with it.
Bad drivers can have an effect. One obvious thing is to check your network interface. Disconnect your machine from the network, and see if it speeds up on stand alone tasks. If so, suspect the interface drivers and look for up to date ones.
Lastly, I recommend WinPatrol - http://www.winpatrol.com/ - to check on startup files. This is similar to other tools mentioned, but files can be disabled, and later re-enabled if needed.

A quick postscript to previous posting. You might also try the following:
1. Make sure that all the temporary files are cleared off your drive. Use Right Click on Drive icon. Then select Properties, and press the Disk Cleanup button.
2. If all else fails, try reverting to a previous system setting using Start -> Help and Support then "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore" There are two reasons why this might work. One is that a previous configuration is more reliable, but another is that this may release hidden files from your disk drive which are used to save the data for System Restore. You can also reduce the space allocated to System Restore data from Control Panel -> System ->System Restore -> Settings.
However, from your description, I suspect that your problems lie elsewhere.

Hi, Thank you for all the above information which I have tried with some success. I am only trying to run normal programs at the moment, ie word, internet, sometime music etc. I have even been onto Crucial and I have found out I can not upgrade anymore??
I have a p3 Optiplex gx150 133mhz with 2 x 256 so 512 ram 1 x 40gb hard drive running xp + another 40gb hard drive as a slave backup drive, idea being store as much as possible on slave drive to make main drive run better? its telling me I have 29gb free on this drive I have just run cclear which helped abit, I defrag'd and scan disked last night? I would normall do this every month to 6 weeks anyway.
I have checked the start up folder and there is only avg virus & anti spy ware as well as the pct firewall thats it I think Could it be a xp setting? I only say that as I changed the main hard drive about 3 months ago from a 20gb so I had to do a full install of xp ? it seems very slow generally , it wasn't this slow with the nearly full 20gb hard drive.
The wireless internet with sky is runing great speed 54.mps and conectivity excellent.
any ideas would be great as my mrs is driving me nuts moaning about it!
Cheers

The easiest way for us to see what's running on your PC is to do an HJT log and post it in THIS thread, not the HJT forum. Follow the instructions at the top of the HJT forum to download HJT then post a log here.

I can't see anything in that log that would make the PC particularly slow. However I have to tell you that within the rules of this forum your question relates to a business machine and as such we do not offer to fix them. If your wife's company wants her to work from home then they should be supplying the computer or at least offer to pay to have any problems fixed. Sorry I can't help you further.
