When I convert or rip a CD to MP3 and load to a memory stick for playing through a transmitter in my car, how do I control the input volume?
Likewise downloading MP3 music from the various websites around the world gives varying degrees of volume dependent on which site I use. If I then mix up the music and load on to a memory stick the volume sometimes varies enormously.
Any ideas would be appreciated, Peter.

To control the volume you will need to use both the .mp3 player and the volume controls in your car.
The optimum performance you may find is having the .mp3 players volume set to mid range and then use the cars volume control to adjust accordingly.
If you're downloading .mp3 files from original source they really should all have equal volume levels.

Apologies, I forgot to include ALL the information!
I do not possess an MP3 player, only the memory sticks and a transmitter for the car.
I have to assume that the same applies nevertheless!

I think what you may need is MP3GAIN which is free software from this address
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php
It levels out the volume of your mp3's and preserves the levels if you copy them to disc or device. It will not affect sound quality at all and it is reversable! I have used it for ages and it works a treat.

Peter, I wasn't aware that a memory stick would play .mp3 files through your car stereo.
Does the car stereo have a USB input?

No, I purchased a remote transmitter that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket.

It transmits for approx 10 metres radius and my car radio picks it up from there!
I only want it in the car because my ears cannot tolerate the ear plugs that the usual MP3 player uses.

Aha I see, wasn't aware of such a device that could turn an ordinary flash drive into a player. I suppose the only downside is that the flash drive cannot control the input volume levels, you may find that sound is distorted, unless the transmitter can somehow reduce the volume level coming into it, thus the sound played through your car speakers isn't distorted.
What I use Peter, is a device not too dissimilar to what you have purchased, it plugs into the "cigarette lighter" which has a wire that connects into my .mp3 players ear/headphone socket.
You tune the transmitter to a radio station, for example 90.4 FM, then you tune your radio to that station and the radio picks up the .mp3 players signal, therefore no need to use the earphones at all.
If the .mp3 players volume level is set to high then the sound played via your car radio is distorted, therefore setting the volume level to medium from the .mp3 player the sound is as it should be and then I control the volume levels via the stereo's volume control on the steering wheel.
