Locking workstation (resolved)
      #34570 - Wed Jan 14 2004 04:23 PM

How do you lock your computer so that nobody else can use it? I think one of the older versions had a 'lock workstation' option, but I can't find it in XP.

Thanks

The easiest way is to enable user logons so that when you leave the PC for a while you log off and only a user with a password can log on again.

Thanks for that Greysts. However, I think I've just figured it out.

I went into task manager, > shutdown > standby.

The screen went blank and when I did cont/alt/delete again, I had to re-enter my password. That's on my own computer, hopefully it will be the same on the work one which is where I really need it.

why did they get rid of the 'lock workstation' option?

In windows NT4 and W2000 that option is still there. I believe it may also be in XP Pro. I think it was seen as a security option in the workplace where any old Tom, Dick or Harry could potentially play with your PC. Those OS's are the standard industry ones and that's probably why they haven't bothered with XP Home.

Try pressing the Windows key & L at the same time i think this locks it up.
