I use eBay very infrequently (13 items in the last 3 years) so I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
I advertised for sale a Pace Sky Digibox. The auction was for 7 days (finished today). In that time I got two emails via eBay. Here's the first Quote:
hi, what will you take for it.
and here's the second Quote:
hi,will you take a bankers Cheque for same day dispatch.Thanks.
How should I have answered?
I actually said I didn't have a BuyItNow price to the first and No to the second. What would you experts have said?

The first question annoys the hell out of me! Sorry but: It is on auction, so bid! I have just answered three questions tonight on items and even though I answered well within time, no bids made. Personal answer would have been: Thank you for your interest. As the item is on auction please feel free to bid.
The second one is a catch out. A banker's cheque? So few things paper can be called 'cleared' that it is hard to understand why they expect you to whiz the item off the moment you get a piece if paper in the post. Personal answer: Thank you for the email. We can only send items on receipt of full cleared payment in our bank account, so you would need to allow us to bank and clear the cheque first.
To be honest, we had 'discussed' Google Checkout in another thread and I would offer them that or PayPal.
Today I sold a nice bunch of items to a lady for her wedding. She emails me first and said 'I get married in three weeks, can you be sure that we will get the items by then'.
I answer 'If you pay by a cleared payment method, Google Checkout or Paypal (AVOID ECHEQUES on PAYPAL), then we can ship by Royal Mail Next Day Special Delivery'.
No answer back, but three hours later she buys 150 quids worth of goods and...............yes, she pays by eCheque. Fortunately clearance date is 9th May and wedding isn't until 19th. I have emailed to say that as I won't get money until after the 9th we won't send until then and she is fine with that.
Back on your point, check in My EBay under messages and see if these are genuine emails. If they don't appear there, they are scams. Also, out of interest, was it the same person emailing twice?

Should I ever put something up for auction on ebay then the answer to the first question Quote:
hi, what will you take for it.
would be the price of the winning bid when the auction ends
As for the second Quote:
hi,will you take a bankers Cheque for same day dispatch.Thanks.
my answer would be Yes I would be happy to take a bankers cheque for dispatch the same day the funds clear in my account

On the subject of the first question, I really got started with eBay when I flogged a stamp collection. Some of the older stuff just shifted, but it all sold. I then found about four or five 'Smiler' Sheets I had bought only two years before - these are sheets of stamps with a border the Royal Mail print specially for collectors (i.e. to make money out of poor sad punters like me).
They cost about 5/6 quid each and I was a bit stunned when two of them went for 50 and 60 each. The last two I realised were something special and after both were up to about 80 each with three days to go I had a similar question to your first - from a guy in Australia who offered me 200 for the two as long as I shut the auction down. He was even kind enough to tell me how to do that.
I replied as I have replied here and one went for 220 and the other went for 240 so I was glad I told him to go - AND he never did bother to bid.
The worst questions I get are the ones where someone bids THEN asks a question. You just do not want to know..............

They were both genuine emails. I don't publicise my email address so all messages must come through eBay.
I think I must be fated with this particular item. The auction finished at midday on Sunday. I sent the winner an invoice with a message included giving my address and email so he can send me a cheque. So far (2145 Tuesday) he has not had the courtesy to respond and I've had nothing in the post.

Obviously if you accepting cheque payment only you will have to allow for post, but also, as it is eBay, wait for the person to read their emails, get the cheque book out, write the cheque, address the envelope, stamp the envelope and then put it on the fireplace for a week before realising they should have sent it.
We have a set rule in all listings - PayPal within three days OR an email explaining payment method (cheque or postal order so we can send out instructions). It generally has the right response. However I have one at the mo (a newbie) that bought over the weekend and has ignored two invoices. Today they will get this:
Thank you for bidding and winning the above item. The listing requests that within three days you either pay in full by Paypal or contact us with your chosen payment method. Payment is expected by cheque or postal order within seven days to allow for post.
Unfortunately we have not heard from you at all. You need to be aware that after seven days eBay will commence an Unpaid Item Dispute against you for non-payment and we are keen to avoid this.
Therefore can you kindly make arrangements to pay for the item as soon as possible. However, if payment is not received seven days after your purchase date, the Unpaid Item Dispute will commence automatically and can lead to unpaid strikes against your account.
We look forward to hearing from you
Works 99% of the time - the only failure is usually on the one that doesn't pay. Some may think that it is harsh, but at the end of the day a purchase is a committment and I've no doubt they would be emailing if we were late sending anything. The simple rule is 'never be afraid to start an Unpaid Item Dispute' - at the very worst if they fail to respond to that, after ten days you can get your selling fee back and leave a neg with them being unable to leave rated feedback.

Thanks for the advice. The cheque arrived today. Still nothing from the buyer. I sent him a note to say that the cheque arrived, I was paying it in today and all things being equal I will post the item next Thursday (5 working days). Still nothing. Perhaps he doesn't like talking to strangers.

You get buyers who NEVER contact you, 'cepting payment, (and those that don't pay), then you get the ones that send you a list of instructions like you don't have a clue what you are doing, but 90%+ are good honest folk. Sounds like a sale anyway.
