I pressed Ctrl, Alt & Delete on my PC the other day but obviously clicked or pressed something else at the same time resulting in the box coming up looking very plain & bland with none of the usual coloured menu at the top.

Any thoughts on my non-technical prodding?

Thanks for any ideas.

Sounds like the task manager is in what's called "tiny footprint mode".

Open up the task manager and double click on the edge of the inside box ( white area )on the left hand side.
