AVG have launched a new, free anti-rootkit program - see this WU article. You can download the program here and read the press release here.

Thank you for your post. I would not touch this program with a bargepole, as I remember only too clearly what the beta version did to my PC. Did two scans, both announced me clear of rootkits and on both occasions the next reboot went wrong as the avg thing had corrupted all the user profiles. Much work with boot discs etc to get up and running again. Never again, and never any avg product again for me.

That's the risk of using products that are in Beta. It's not in beta anymore so the problems will be ironed out.
Although, no Vista support yet.

Hi, evilmonkeyzz, I appreciate your comments, and of course you make a very valid point. I just don't to risk all that aggro happening again.

To be honest if I had experienced what you did, I wouldn't touch it either!

I wish to lodge an apology here, and to recant on some of my words in my previous post. I bit the bullet today, downloaded and ran the AVG Anti Rootkit prog, which told me I am clean, and guess what..................on a reboot the computer started normally. Whatever ailed the beta version has been rectified, apparently. Phew, and sorry to all for my previous rant and rave.

That's great, thanks for letting us know! Your experiences really highlight the possible risks of using beta programs. I'm not much of a risk-taker, so I usually play safe and wait until the final version of a program comes out. I don't blame you for being fed-up before!

iv just downloaded this programme and ran it- its appeared with around 20 rootkits! I straight away went to delete this but was given a stark warning about possible results (ie problems booting up) is this wise to delete all found rootkits? Thanks

I wouldn't be confident to advise you on this. Some legitimate Windows programs show up on anti-rootkit scans. I suggest that you post a list of what was found on the Security help forum and someone who knows more about rootkits than I do should be able to advise you on which ones to get rid of.
