Dreamweaver - Images Won't Upload
      #341285 - Sun Apr 01 2007 04:19 PM

I run www.jocknroll.co.uk website, which, in it's old form, was reviewed in Web User last year. I got Dreamweaver and set about rejigging the website. The new website is now up but I can't get the images to load.

When the website was originally put together I used Microsoft Publisher (no, don't laugh) and then WISE FTP to send the files to 1and1 who host the site.

When I go into Manage Site and choose Local Info, I have input the following information but I don't know if it's right:

Site Name: Jock 'n' Roll 2007
Local root folder: ..\Jock n Roll Website - New\jocknroll2007\
Refresh local file list automatically: Checked
Default images folder: ..\Jock n Roll Website - New\jocknroll2007\images\
Links relative to: Site Root Checked
HTTP address: http://www.jocknroll.co.uk/
Case-sensitive links: Unchecked
Cache: Enable Cache Checked

When I choose Remote Info, an error message appears: "WARNING: The selected folder does not conatin the current site's home page. the site map cannot be built."
I press OK and have the following information:

Access: FTP selected
FTP host: www.jocknroll.co.uk
Host directory: /./
Login: My WISE FTP login (should it be 1and1 ?)
Password: My WISE FTP Password (should it be 1and1?)
Use Passive FTP: Checked
Use Firewall: Unchecked
Use Secure FTP (SFTP): Unchecked
Maintain synchronisation of information: Checked
Automatically upload files to server on save: Unchecked
Enable file check in and check out: Unchecked.

Can anyone work out where I've gone wrong in terms of getting the images on to the website? It's bound to be something obvious!!

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,

Just having a quick look, I think initially you might want to rename your images. Your images may (or may not) be there, either way they probably won't show on the pages due to naming anomalies.

What you have is files like this; Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix.jpg which gets translated to; Teenage%20Fanclub%20-%20Grand%20Prix.jpg in the browser, which doesn't exist and therefore doesn't show.

It's best practise to not use spaces or uppercase in file naming conventions. Use underscores for spaces if need be.

Renaming within Dreamweaver will ensure all references are updated on the relevant pages.

Okay, I'll give that a try and let you how I get on.

OK. Well that work won't be wasted in the long run... Onwards...

The 'local root folder' should be where your entire site resides with its pages and sub-folders, etc. I assume that's the folder called 'jocknroll2007', if so that should be OK.

It therefore follows that all your images are in the folder 'images' within 'jocknroll2007', if so that's fine too.

The HTTP address is correct, so basically all that local info is good.

In the Site Definition dialogue goto 'Site Map Layout' and ensure the sites home page is identified; should be index.htm (or html, php, etc.) within the root folder 'jocknroll2007'. Without this DW can get its knickers in a twist as it has no point of reference for the home page, and subsequently all other internal linkages, within the site map.

As for the remote info... The host directory would often be 'www/', although I don't know how 1and1 set out their client servers. It could equally be 'public', 'public_html', etc.

Your login should be your 1and1 username, and password speaks for itself. Once you've filled that in just press the 'Test' button to see if all is right.

See how you get on with that and let me know.

Try viewing an image in your browser:

http://www.jocknroll.co.uk/index_files/image420.png

I get the following message (in FireFox):
The image "http://www.jocknroll.co.uk/index_files/image420.png" cannot be displayed because it contains errors.

It may be worth checking you don't have a .jpg or a .gif named as a .png as this causes such issues.

Looks like you've fixed it.

I've just been to everypage I could find and all images downloaded fine.

All the best - Duncan

It looks like he is using .jpg images now, rather then .png

Don't ask me how I fixed it but I did and that's all that counts. A big thank you to everyone who gave advice, especially the Fat Controller.
