Morning All
A friend of mine is currently struggling with the above modem on a brand new PC with the Vista OS. I've had a look on the thompson website for downloads but there's no mention of Vista drivers. It came with a cd which he has installed, but he says that he is only getting orange ( I think) lights coming on the modem. I suggested that it may be a driver issue or possibly a faulty modem.
Any ideas would be great.
Thanks

There are known issues with trying to use USB ADSL Modems with Vista because:
a) Many of the supplied ISP CDs don't run in Vista.
b) There may not be Vista-compatible drivers for the Modem.
The suggestion is to replace the USB Modem with a combined "Router & ADSL Modem".

Thanks for that mgmcc, just to update this saga, I've since found out that the modem worked ok on the previous PC which had to be returned under warranty to PC World (the 2nd one since christmas) so this (3rd) PC which was given to them now has Vista on it. So I told him to phone ISP and ask for an up to date driver. I also managed to find a phone number for customer services at thompson for him to ring. Thompson said that they would send a vista driver to him for the princely sum of £2. I find it rather irritating that they couldn't have made it available as a download from their site. It's not as if Vista came along unannounced.
The NIS that came with the first PC is also for XP, so I've had to download the necessary and copy it onto the new PC for when he gets on the net to re-register.
My friend is on a very steep learning curve, as this was his first PC and he is not computer savvy at all, so this is all very discouraging as his first venture into the world of PCs and the WWW.
I will try to help as much as I can, and needless to say I have told him to visit this forum and to buy the magazine because you've all helped me with problems that I've faced.

Update.
Two driver disks received from Thompson and ISP with "latest drivers" on them. Neither of them worked, so he went back to PC world where he was told that that particular modem is not Vista compatible. He therefore had to buy another one which did the trick.
Finally sorted.

I can sympathise with your friend- I'm in the same boat and this is the nearest I've got to help on why I can't connect to the internet.
I'm honestly feeling rather disillusioned that it is such a hastle.
How much should this Vista-compatible modem cost? And how easy will it be to install, given I can only just turn the laptop on (7 years of a work laptop has spoilt me)?

It would be a far better solution all round to get your self an ADSL modem/router. They don't need drivers and are therefore Vista compatible straight away. They have the added advantage of using Ethernet connections rather than USB, which is notoriously unreliable and, as you've found out, impossible to get updated drivers for.

UrgHH !!! Have the same (almost) my new Dell Dimension arrived last week but could get little use as I could not connect to the net through my Speedtouch 330 . BT Yahoo Broadband service agreed to send me discs with the right drivers and they finally turned up after 5 days ( all attempts to confirm they had been sent failed -no one would take that level of responsibility ! ) I can now connect using the Speedtouch but its pretty tempremental ! If you log out but don't close the computer down it won't start again - will start (just) if you shut down and re-start . Answer seems to be leave it on all day >
I went to PC World and asked for help - response was to advise there was nothing Vista compatible except wireless router (which I don't want for now)
Any suggestions as to the right product to buy to ensure some stability ( and stop me from having nervous breakdown) will be gratefully received .
( I did not want a new computer anyway but my 7 year old Time machine starting making too many coughs and splutters + screen had grey lines ! )

Same answer as before. Any ADSL modem/router connected to your PC via ethernet will work regardless of the operating system, be it Windows 95 or Vista, as it doesn't need a driver. It will also be quicker and more reliable than USB. Take your pick from this lot.

Hi I had the same problem as everyone who has responded to this.
I too rang my ISP who advised to ring Thomson and was advised of the £2 cd, however the drivers are downloadable, which will avoid you paying the £2 postal fee.
There are two drivers, they are both the same drivers. They are both the same except that one is configured for GB settings.
Firstly the speedtouch modem st330 is compatible with Vista, however you must firstly uninstall the old speedtouch software & drivers, if you run the new drivers over the old software, it causes conflicts.... Believe me i have done it.
Navigate to tomson website - http://www.thomson.net/EN/Home/MiniSites...p;searchrank=1. Download UK Version of ST330/USB MS Windows Vista driver here - (Vista41C.exe), run the setup file.
You will be prompted to select your required settings, if this appears select connection type 'pppoa' & vci '0.38'. Once setup is complete a new icon will appear on desktop 'My ISP' - this is the short cut to select when connecting. Remember to restart computer firstly. Unfortunately for me, once i had selected my settings and attempted to connect, i was returned unable to connect error. I went through all the settings, if i had just simply restarted the computer after each one it would have worked.
Believe me this was a knightmare, first the setup.exe could not create a Thumbs.db file, upon investigating this, this file is a systems db file and it was created but was hidden. In the end i flattened my c: drive and reinstalled vista using the D drive dell support, this did the trick and the file successfully created.
My speedtouch connects every time and it is not temprimental. Getting this driver to work, takes a lot of time & patience (trial & error), attempting multiple combinations.
Yes as one person said it would be easier to connect via Ethernet, therefore no driver is required, however if you are like myself and was only supplied the USB connection, and don't wish to go out buy additional kit, then the USB connection will work. Try what i have explained, fingers x you wont have any more problems.
** I hope this information is useful to readers, hopefully, the aim is that you do not go through the same agony as myself and these other people alike.

That link that you kindly put on wasn't available when I was looking through the Thompson website. Having said that, even if I'd have got it the subsequent set up procedure you described sounds too complicated for me to sort out, and my friend would have given up on computers for life over it. He's thrown a bit more money at it and it's working now. (touches wooden head)

1) disconnect modem 2) delete any Broadband connections in control panel 3) uninstall previous speedtouch applications in control panel 4) reboot 5) download the vista driver above from a mates computer and bung it in a drive on your PC 6) plug in the speedtouch when it tells you and not before 7) a wizard should then ask for your ISP user name and password 8) that should work
If you don't do the lot meticulously, it wont work.

Genius!! Many thanks. Had exactly the same problems. Needed to run my Speedtouch in Vista because when my connection drops out with my modem router connecting the speedtouch is the only way to re-establish it (except when incoming or outgoing calls do the trick!!) Best wishes, Mike.
