Hi can anyone help? I run a voluntary group and until recently was using my home e-mail and free space for the group (BTyahoo 24/7 dialup. We have now had phone line and broadband installed at our site office. I want to transfer the web site to the site connection free web space (geocities). I know how to download the files and upload to geocities but I would like people to still find us if they type in the old address as we are now well known and search engines find us ok. How can I do this, why can't you choose your domain name with free geocities. If I just put a redirect code on old site this will only help for a few weeks as BT are discontinuing dial up, so I will have to upgrade to broadband at home and then i will lose the old site anyway. Any suggestions? Why do I have to use geocities to get my free webspace that is included with my fee. Also shouldn't BT have made some allowance for situations were people are losing dialup and therefore there web site!

I take it from your question that you've been advertising the address of the free web space that you had with BT rather than having your own domain name.
The best bet is probably to get a domain name to use in the future e.g. www.voluntarygroupname.org.uk Then put a redirect on your old space so it tells people the new address and then redirects them after a few seconds. That will hopefully allow most of your users to learn the new address in time.
This is why its best to have a domain name of your own - if you change ISP then you dont have to change your website address.
