What's the best way to make sure you get on Google's page 1 for a specific search? My business is focussed on stairlifts in the North West. Ideally I'd like to be on page 1 if someone types "stairlifts" and definitely if they type "stairlifts manchester", "stairlifts huddersfield" halifax, botlon, rochdale, etc.
Thanks Bazza

Well all those words would make it very easy to just put into the keyword tag on your website
Code:
<meta name="keywords" content="stairlifts manchester, stairlifts huddersfield, stairlifts halifax, stairlifts rochdale, stairlifts bolton " />
Equally you can sing up for Google Webmaster Tools
I'm sure tools made by Google to help users get higher in their rankings is worth taking a look at.

Everyone wants to be No1 in Google. The only guaranteed way to do it is have more sponsor money available than the rest. There can only be one at the top, and if there are a million or so others out there with the same meta tags and selling the same items, money is the only way to do it I'm afraid, no matter how much SEO you apply. You might have half a chance if they do actually type the area but most will simply type 'stairlifts'. Sorry to be a misog but there are too many sites out there battling for position.

The first thing you'll need is plenty of patience, it won't happen over night. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are being "economical with the truth".
You'll find plenty of information on these sites.

Thanks everyone
My site's built with 1and1.co.uk and I've done Metatags through their tool which have got me onto page 1 for Halifax, Huddersfield and Rochdale.
Will Google Tools cause any conflict with what 1and1's tools do anyway?
Is it worth me signing up for their keywords program to get higher up the others?
Thanks again, Bazza

As well as the metatags, make sure you use the relevant words in the page content - the more text you have on the page the more there is for google to index and if you use the key words/phrases regularly then that should help.
Dont be tempted to try cheating with invisible text etc as google will penalise you for that.

I would suggest that If there are any national stairlift websites, that attract alot of visitors, such as forums or review sites, then politely ask if you can link to your site from theirs.
Its a good way of generating hits to your site and cold help your ranking within google.
I'm quite sure that the google spiders only visit pages on the off chance and only come back more often when there's a change in the content on sites. So remember to update content a few times a month, that way the spiders can keep checking through the pages and rank them appropriately.

G'day Wiggster.
Google spiders visit sites on average every 30 days unless indicated by a meta tag to visit more often and how and where to craw. Robot.txt also plays a part.

I know they come regularly, monthly, but I thought that they check keywords/meta tags and content too. If a pages content has changed then, in order for the spider to keep the site upto date, they would need to crawl the webpages again.
If I'm wrong, I apologise

They do check all of that for changes. Crawlers/spiders will call daily if requested. And also the Robot.txt file held in the root directory, unless you are using free hosting or your host will not allow a robot.txt entry.

They craw the webpages using commands placed in a meta tag and robot.txt The new content will at some stage be updated by one of the crawlers or spiders.

I just done a google search for stairlifts manchester - this thread is in position 4 out of about 28,800. So to rank top 5 for that phrase is NOT going to be difficult.
the robots.txt file is mainly used to instruct crawlers/bots what NOT to index.
meta tags in your head section - The <title>page info</title> & <meta name="description" content="your info here"> are the main ones to concentrate on. Make sure they are unique for each page and are not 'keyword stuffed'.
How often your site is crawled depends on several factors. A few are: the number of inbound links to it - and not just to the home page, try and get links to your deeper pages, for example, www.yoursite.co.uk/stairliftsmanchester.html try and get links with the anchor text "stairlifts manchester" to that page. how often the site is updated with fresh content. how high the sites PR is (for google) how high the link pages PR is
Off the top of my head on other points, webmaster tools WILL NOT do anything to rank your sites higher. keyword meta tags aren't used by google. bots coming every 30 days may be true for some sites, googlebot can visit more than once a day. signing up for a keywords program to get higher up is a waiste of time.
Good content and GOOD inbound links with the anchor text using the keyphrases you want to rank for are the way to go. You will easily get top 5 if you do that, maybe even #1 - and that can be done without spending ANY $$ nor will you need 'patience' or time. Also remember those title and descrition tags too.
I hope some of that helps.
