I'm looking to host my website elsewhere and although I have done searches and come up with a couple I quite like, I wondered if any of you have any recommendations. Some details of what they offer, price etc would be useful.

Can you tell us what you want from a host as this will help. There are lots of hosts all with different packages for varying prices.
Things like: Amount of space required, monthly bandwidth limits, CGI, PHP, MySQL etc, do you need a host that supports Frontpage extensions.

At the moment the site is hosted by UKU as free web space using a dial up doodah. I have no server side access, can't run my own CGI stuff etc so everything like that has to be remotely hosted. I'm not knocking that as the services I have are extremely good. However, UKU used to allow unlimited webspace, as many names under the one account as you like and therefore as many different websites. They have reduced their service so much that I am concerned that before long my main website is going to go down the pan. The total web space has now been reduced to 25mb.
My site is about 10mb on my hard disk and has about 105 pages, but I want to add more to it. yes, I want to be able to run CGI scripts and maybe PHP, perhaps more later on. I guess I want options and flexibility. I don't need Frontpage extensions at the moment (I do my sites in Word).
Bandwidth is something that confuses me a little. The site is getting about 20,000 hits a month at the moment, but as I don't have a counter thingy on all pages it is probably more.
I have found what appears to be a good deal at Compila.com where the bandwidth is unlimited, it has lots of features too, 60mb webspace and includes a domain name. I will need the latter as being hosted by UKU at the moment it has one of their URLs. Works out about £23 a year (with a .co.uk name, more for .com) which looks pretty good to me.
I've also found one at web-mania.com for £23 pa with 500mb, 6gb transfer, unlimited email, subdomains etc, cgi and a few other things.
I just want to ensure that I get it right first time.

I use 34sp.com. Doesn't offer the bulk of web-mania, but then unless you're a professional or running a corporate site you don't need all that anyway.
34sp has all the features you want, and prices start at £15 a year for 30 MB space, 1,000 MB bandwidth/month, and 10 mailboxes + 10 autorespnders + 10 redirects + unlimited aliases. They don't sell a variety of preset packages, you buy that basic pack then add whatever additional space, bandwidth and mailboxes you want to custom build/expand as needed. All the scripts/SSI etc facilities are included as standard, and Frontpage extensions can be switrched on if requested at any time for no extra charge.
If you go over your limits, they will let you know, and in the case of traffic surtplus they offset the excess against the next month's allowance rather than block off the site, unless it becomes a regular problem when they will need you to buy extra bandwidth. Either way, the team are a friendly and helpful bunch, and include a lively forum for troubleshooting, asking about features, etc.
You can pay online using a credit/Switch card, or by post with a UK cheque/postal order or International Money Order. Prices are expressed in £ Sterling, US Dollar and Euros and payment is made annually. Also their physical servers are based in London, not leased in the US, so if you're British and targetting the local audience, page loads are lightning fast.

How does bandwith translate into page views? I want to ensure I have enough of that from the start and although many sites have lost rank with Google recently, mine has gone up and is usually in the first page of results for most things to do with it. I guess I want to allow for the future here too.

I don't think 1000mb per month will be enough and as I said before I want to allow for the future too, but I will still look into the one you recommended back there. I have reduced the size of just about all graphics on the site and most pages (105+ pages) only have one small one, if any. I don't want to get rid of them all - it's what adds a bit of fun to the site as a visitor told me So bandwidth is quite a consideration, perhaps the main one and that's where Compila looks so good as it is unlimited.

Personally I've got sites with sitehq.co.uk and candohosting.co.uk both excellent and well priced, and I've heard good things about clook.net

I'll tell you the one thing which had the biggest inlfuence on my choice of host - location. A lot of UK web hosts are really only rresellers, they offer you the hosting then the site ends up on a US server for which they get a discount on space/bandwidth used. I discovered that one with my last employer's web hosts.
It's a personal thing, but I prefer that my British domain is eactly that, British named, British owned and British located. That's good for my target audience as it means faster loading, and critical for me so I can be confident I only deal with one organisation re. my hosting issues, and only need refer to UK law re. my site activities and enforcement of my rights and any abuses at the domain.

I feel a bit like that. All of my site is aimed at UK visitors. I'm not sure if my server is in the UK because 1&1 have data centres in the UK, Germany, US and a few more.

1&1 Internet host my site, the same as owens, they are extremly good.

They are a good host but you have to have a bit of brass to use them. I'm on the home package at the moment.

1&1, I rate very very low. Very expensive... Although they have very good uptime.
I would reccomend www.jc-host.com . They start at $1 (around 75p) for 1Gb Space with MySQL and all scripting. They have been up a few months (although their release was a few days ago) and they have been brilliant. They use cPanel, which many hosts lack.
If your wondering, their server is located in the UK, although their prices are in USD, because that currency is used more often.
Highly reccomend!

For what it's worth, I have some domains hosted by EasySpace. Been using them since 1999 without a hitch.
I also have a couple with 1and1 which I plan to move shortly. Nothing wrong with the service but I'm looking for a ColdFusion host.

I don't rate 1&1 badly at all. The speed and the uptime is absoulutely brilliant. Never had any problems at all. And they provide you with the software which I have used lots. If thats the price I pay for quality hosting and the software I need, so be it.

Google Ads wern't available when I signed up. They had an offer when I signed up that you got a LAKS USB Watch if you signed a six month contract. Stupid me didn't take the offer because I was scared that I wouldn't like them and be stucked.

USB watch? That sounds good. I would prefer that. With these google ads, I think you only get £50 worth, and you have to pay for after that... Still nice... I wouldnt reccomend them tho...

WOW you guys are certainly on the ball. I came back here (eventually finding my original posts - couldn't threads with new posts be moved to the top of the list as current?) to refresh on what others had said about hosting.
I didn't do anything about it while I had problems with my computer which with the help of some fanastic folks here I finally resolved. Now I am ready and able to get my site on its own domain and seek hosting.
It's been interesting reading the posts here of late and the links to other ones too. Oh Jack, you naughty boy! Sorry, but your attempts at hiding the fact that jc-hosting is yours have put me off even thinking about using it as a host - unless you want to provide services free of charge for those you have deceived here.
Well as an update to my original post, I am now looking to possibly host two websites. The astrology one currently on UKU is the main one I want to move as I said originally: http://www.aquamoonlight.uku.co.uk I have totally redesigned the site ready for it to be rehosted, so on UKU it is the original one.
My other site is hosted on free web space by a dial up thing with Chilly Hippo, part of Tiscali. Admittedly they offer a brilliant service with this including as standard all the things you would normally have to pay dearly for. But, people have been having problems, supposedly with the URL. If anyone would like to check this out for me and report any problems I would be very grateful. It is non-commercial.

So, as far as hosting goes, I am now thinking along the lines of having a domain (though not got a clue what to call it as it would have to be neutral/general) with sub domains so that both sites, totally unrelated, could share the same domain. With me? lol

Hi Jack,
RE the current posts being at the top.
Go to the User Options, click edit, adjacent to Display preferences, number of shown threads, languages, colors... Then check to see that the Time Slip is enabled.
This will place the thread with the latest posts at the top of the lists.
