Advice for beginner in making websites
      #337845 - Tue Mar 13 2007 08:27 PM

I want to make a basic website where my wife can advertise dolls houses she custom decorates. I have bought a domain name and want to create a site using something like Webeden. Not sure what I have to do from there about hosting it and getting it onto the main search engines. Can anyone please advise me point-by-point as to how I proceed?
Thank you so much.

Hosting

Trickiest bit is finding a decent host, there are thousands of them.

Once you've decided on a host you need to purchase a "hosting package" from them.

Aventure are my current hosts, Uk company with datacentres in the USA and Dublin, choose Dublin. The dollar pricing is a pain but you can do the conversion at XE.com that doesn't mean they are the right ones for you. Doesn't mean they are the best either, but I'm happy with them at the moment

If you find a host you think may be suitable, ask here first, to see what others think of them. There are plenty of bad ones about.

Your host "should" send you all the information you'll need to upload your site and access the control panel.

When that's done you'll need to upload your site using an FTP programme. I use ACEftp3, but there are many available. Alternatively you can upload using your online control panel.

Try filehippo for FTP programs. You'll find several on that page, or you could also try Tucows, they have more prorammes, but it takes longer to search and find what you're looking for.

All the best - Duncan

1&1, fasthosts, etc., (google 'web hosting') all offer a hosting package with a WYSIWYG editor for creating a site.

I've used 1&1.co.uk and they are really good. At the time I registered a domain with them and signed up to Instant webpage or whatever its called it was very reasonably priced. When I left them about a year later I even got a refund of the money I had just paid for a further twelve months and signing my domain over to another host was very simple. I only left them because I really struggled with their online website editor and found a better one with another host, but if you're going to make your website the proper way and upload your own files then I would highly recommend them. Incidentally if you're new to website creating then I would also recommend a book called "Creating Web Sites" by Matthew McDonald in "The Missing Manual" series published by Pogue Press. Its a really good book for beginners.

Nothing is ever straightforward, but how boring would that be?
