MS COnfig doesn't actually reset anything....
      #337777 - Tue Mar 13 2007 03:24 PM

Hi.

I am using MS Config to disable to standard programs but after I reboot windows the same programs run at startup - seemingly MSCONFIG hasn't actually done anything.......

What could this be?

Please advise.

Jon.

What are the names of the programs you're trying to prevent from starting?

The reason I ask is that, if msconfig is misbehaving, you could have 'caught' something. That something could be starting itself.

Hi mate.

There isn't anything in there that I am worried about. I run windows defender often, have CA Antivirus and firewall and use Adaware and ad watch pro. I am 'fairly' confident that I don't have a virus / bug but I am happy to be proved wrong if it explains my problems.

The programs are regular ones like Windows Live Messenger, NVIDIA driver tool / utility, and a few others. The strange thing is that I get an error message at startup saying that it cannot load a file contained within c/programfiles/bitdefender (not the 'exact' link) and basically the pc thinks that a BIT DEFENDER antivirus file / folder is still installed when it certainly is not. There is no such file on there (although I did have it installed on there a few months ago.....).

What does this indicate?

Thanks for your help so far.

Jon.

Although I don't use Windows Messenger these days, I think it may have a setting that is activated when you run it. Look for 'Start Windows Messenger when Windows starts' or similar wording in its Options or Preferences.

There will probably be more than one NVidia program that starts up. Again, look in the Options/Preferences of the program(s).

The BitDefender will be an orphaned entry that you should be able to find in msconfig.

Also download Startups.exe from here http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php or Autoruns from here http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html or Startup Inspector from here http://www.windowsstartup.com/ to determine which programs are not needed at start up.

Check your exact startup program names against one of the above.

Ok thankyou I will. I know exactly which ones I don't want or need but after I set them to 'not run at startup' and then reset the machine the same programs are present.

MSCONFIG doesn't allow me to configure the start up anymore......
