I have just installed Windows XP SP2 on a new hard disc and whenever I use MSCONFIG to alter something in the startup tab I get the following message:
"An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log in using an Administrator account to make the change"
I do use an Administrator account, and the changes take effect despite the error message. Can anyone tell me how to stop the error message, please? It is the same version of XP as was running on the previous HD and I didn't get that error message then. The only difference between the contents of the current HD and the previous one is that I now have some Hewlett Packard photography software

It's either malware or more likely the HP software. Read this whole thread http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic42578.html

BurrWalnut,
Many thanks for that link. You are quite right, I think, in saying that it might be the HP software causing the problem as the it only happened after I had installed it and it seems to have happened to other people using HP software as well.
Despite the error message that I get, any changes that I want MSCONFIG to do, get implemented anyway so I won't do anything further. I did find a new version of MSCONFIG but it gave the same error message.
Thanks again

Have you got Crap Cleaner installed ? www.ccleaner.com If so Press the "Tools" button, then "Startup" on the Next screen to disable items in the Startup list without using the MSconfig link
Might bypass those Messages?

Thanks for that info, BedstorefromAP.
Yes, I have Crap Cleaner so I don't need to bother with MSCONFIG anymore.
