Hi, i have another query. I've got a friends laptop and i want to try and get it back to how it was when she first brought it, she has no disks for it, so i can't use them to help me, I've tried formatting it but it alwasy comes up with an error. Is there a way i can do it, so that nothing that her ex put on it remains. So far i've managed to nearly kill the thing!! I've lost the sound (which someone on here is helping me with) I've lost her wireless internet setting. All the microsoft programmes. I've tried to add i-tune to it, but it keeps coming up with an error, which is a bit odd, coz i'd got it on there yesterday, but had to delete it again, but now it won't go!
Please can someone try and help me before i go mad, and either throw the laptop of myself out the window. Many thanks

Before you ask for any further help or discover any further issues, can you tell us how you formatted the laptop?

I didn't format it, it won't let me. I used the xp disk from my pc on her laptop, coz that's what someone told me to do.

and this person that told you to do so, did they advise where you were to get the product key from, as I assume your friend has lost that too?
You don't tell us this error that you were presented with when trying to format the laptop either.

The key was on the bottom of the laptop. The error that kept coming up when trying to format - it said something about it couldn't format as i still had programmes running which i didn't and double checked that with Task Manager.
Have i done somthing wrong?

Not sure how you attempted to do a format, what steps did you take?

Was told to Left Click on Start > My Computer > Local Disk C . Right Click and the left click on format.

That isn't the way to format Windows I'm afraid. Tell your friend that she needs to buy a legal copy of WindowsXP and once the disc has been purchased, post back and I will tell you how to format Windows properly.

On a side note, did you say you have your own Windows XP installation disc and just to check it's not a recovery disc? If so you can use that and then use the legal product key that is on the laptop.
If so reply back and I can tell you what steps to take in reformatting the hard drive.
