HELP! how do I get rid of this?
      #33734 - Sat Jan 10 2004 01:01 PM

This is a problem on my parent's computer and I have no idea what to do?
He was going through the UK Villages site looking at the various village sites and one of the village links was a porn site.
It seems to have invaded his computer now, placing links both on the tool bar and on the desk top, and it uses those to access the inernet as soon as his computer is switched on.

And another problem it starts downloading things onto it as well, and the only way to stop it is to turn the computer of! Help!!!

First please get Spybot S&D to clear out most of the spyware.

Short tutorial and download link here: Spybot S&D

Fix everything SpybotSD labels in red.

Next Reboot your computer then:
Download Hijack This
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Hi,

Please do this.

Get HijackThis (freeware) here.

Unzip it, launch HijackThis, then press scan, and press save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

Open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it
Come back to Webuser, (this post), click Post Reply, click in post box, Right Click and paste its contents there.

Someone will take a look at your file and advise.

Richard

Thank you for your help, but my son has got intouch and told me to leave it, he'll sort it out for them. I was hoping that it was something a beginner like me could do, but now I'll leave it to an expert. :D

I am grateful though. :)

Thank you Richard but my son is going to fix it now, he'll be over on one of his visits tomorrow. Thank goodness for a son in the know, I was thinking just maybe I could do it but he says to leave it.

What makes you think you can't fix it yourself? With the help you will get from the people on this forum I am absolutely positive you can do it despite what your son might think. Go on, show him you're not so daft as he might think.
