Constructive Criticism Please?
      #337296 - Sat Mar 10 2007 11:35 PM

I would very much welcome any constructive criticism you may like to offer on my first web site http://www.kinemagigz.com

Launched on 14th September 2006 after 11 months graft (and still a live 'work in progress') KinemaGigz is a complete chronicle of every live music performance in the Kinema Ballroom Dunfermline Fife Scotland from its opening night in 1938 to the present day, together with artist biographies, photographs and recollections from the people that were there.

Many thanks,
Ghoulz.

Hi Ghoulz and welcome to WU. I really like your site and I haven't got any criticism to offer, constructive or otherwise! I found the site pleasing to look at, easy to navigate and pages loaded quickly, very important as I'm on dial-up. I've never been to Dunfermline, but this must be a fascinating resource for both past and present residents.
I have to say that I'm no expert on websites, but this one works well and nothing struck a discordant note with me.

Madeline.

There's a message scrolling across the page near the top under the photo's. I can't read it, it's going like the clappers. Can you slow it down a bit, it's very distracting.

This is the line where problem lies:
Code:

<marquee loop="1" behavior="slide" style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;
text-decoration: blink; color: #0000FF; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;
text-align:left" bgcolor="#FFFFCC" scrollamount="40" scrolldelay="0"
width="559">See my 'Wot's New' page for all the latest updates</marquee>

Have you considered using CSS to take some of the bulk out of this code and a lot more within that page?

All the best - Duncan

That's interesting, "See my 'Wot's New' page for all the latest updates" didn't show at all in Firefox, which I was using when I looked at this site. With IE7, it just came into sight and stayed where it was and I had no difficulty reading it. Is seems as if some work needs to be done to ensure that everything displays properly in FF.

I should have said, I was viewing with Firefox.

In IE it does as you describe Madeline, scrolls in and stops.

In Opera, it appears on the left and blinks.

All very odd, 3 browsers, 3 different behaviours.

All the best - Duncan

hi mate, in f/fox as stated the scroller is turbo charged, however in ie7, it screams in and slams to a halt mid screen.

nicely laid out site, but i found the text on the buttons a little difficult to read. but dont be disheartened by this , crack on and correct it and you have a great site!

In FF, I don't see it at all, fast or otherwise! In Opera, it flashes on and off.

A great deal of time and effort I guess has gone into this site and it shows. A great deal of information about a topic that you really believe in makes facinating reading. Just a couple of points that have previously been mentioned....The blue moving message moves far too quick for me to read in Firefox and like Sunstreak I found the blue writing on the buttons a little hard to see. otherwise a job well done...

That's Brilliant! You have obviously spent a lot of time and energy into researching this place and it's very apparant in your work. It has a easy to follow layout with quick loading pages.
I like the idea of producing the history of the building and all your other resources and links are well thought out.
Well done!

Very many thanks to you all for taking the time to look it over for me, I sincerely do appreciate your efforts on my behalf.

I'm pretty new to this game and this is my first site & so I've a lot to learn.

Duncan - can you perhaps direct me to a site to explain what CSS is and how it works because I'd like to take your advice.

I'll certainly experiment with the button text colour to improve that too.

How do I go about altering the marquee to operate properly in these other browsers? The site is built on FrontPage 2003.

Once again I'm very grateful to you all.

Best Wishes,
Ghoulz.

The best place to learn CSS is w3schools-css.

You could also have a look at HTML Goodies - css

If it was my site, I'd get rid of the marquee altogether and replace it with an ordinary line of text. There is a "blink" tag in that line, that should go no matter what. Blinking text is guaranteed to annoy your visitors.

Advice noted Duncan and blink tag removed as suggested - many thanks.

Appreciate the site directions for CSS - I'll certainly give them a close look-see, (hope it's not beyond me!)

Thanks again one & all,
Ghoulz.
