hello
I have Windows XP.
For about 3 weeks now the computer would not go on. It would stop during booting, with the W XP logo on the screen and the wee blue light flashing. Even if I left it for 30 minutes nothing would happen.
I tried to start it in Safe Mode, which worked, but I didn't really know what to do then. I tried system restore on the start menu, but an error stating something about this not working in safe mode.
I've tried putting the computer on and off for these last few weeks, causing great frustration.
Now, all of a sudden tonight it has started as if nothing was wrong.
Is there a program I can run that can check the hard drive is OK. Does it need defragmented (whatever that means)
I'm scared to turn the computer off, incase I can't get it on again.
The same happened about 2 months ago. After a few weeks it seemed fine again, as was so, for another 3-4 weeks again.
HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Many thanks

The very first thing you need to do is back up all your important data and programmes to some sort of external media (external hard disk, DVD, CD etc.). Next you need to be in a position to re-install everything including Windows itself. Do you have a Windows CD or Recovery CD? After that you need to buy a new hard disk and start to rebiuld your installation.
If any that sounds daunting, come back and we'll offer more help.

You can download the diagnostic software from hdd manufacturers' site, if this diagnostic will show that your drive is not working properly then follow the advice above.
