I've recently used ncleaner on my pc to get rid of any junk etc and to generally give my system and good clean. All seemed fine however when I've got rid of the junk and cleaned and repaired the registry my 'most frequently used programs list' on the start menu has disappeared, ooooooooops. I know I should've backed it up and am sure this has something to do with the problem, but I really don't have a clue of how to get it back, any ideas please

Right click on the Start button, select properties. Click on Start Menu tab then the Customise button. This gives you the option for the number of programs on the start menu, which will obviously populate itself as you use programs, it also gives you other options for customising the Start Menu to suit your needs. Hope this helps.

Click on Start Menu tab then the Customise button.
. If you then click on the advanced tab , is the box ticked where it says "list my most recently opened documents" ?
If you really think it's a registry problem then a system restore ( to a date before you made the changes ) , will get you back to normal.

There is no system restore point before the problem occurred so I'm a bit snookered there, any other ideas from anybody on how to get my 'most frequently used programs list' icons back on the left of my start menu..... Have tried near enough everything without success, btw its nothing to do with the recently opened documents thingy its the 'icons' that I need back , though thanks for trying

I've never interfered with the registry before and really wouldn't know where to start. Any information on where to begin, downloads needed etc would be very gratefully received ta

You need to go to Start > Run, type regedit and press enter.
Expand the key by clicking the + to the left of the addresses shown, until you get to a value on the right that matches the ones shown in the box on the page linked to.
You right-click the value and select delete.
Close regedit and restart.
Make a backup before you start by clicking File > Export and giving it a meaningful name
Also set a restore point in system restore.
Look here for more information on using regedit.
Don't do it if you feel unconfident. Live with the minor problem you have

Nick -- I had the same problem and could not figure out how to correct it. The problem was in Vista but my solution may work for XPSP2 as well. Here what I did:
1. Right click the Start Menu 2. Click Properties 3. Select "Classic Start Menu" 4. Run any program and then see if it appears in the Recent Program list. In Vista, any program that was "pinned" to the Start Menu won't appear in the Recent Program List. Choose something you rarely use. 5. Right click the Start Menu and choose properties again. 6. Select the regular Start Menu 7. See if the program you ran in the Classic Start Menu appears. It did for me.
Apparantly, the registry key somehow gets re-written. Hope it helps ya'

If RadarSadies' reply doesn't help,
Go to this page
Scroll down to line 133, download, save and double click on the Restore Most Frequently Used,
Click yes to agree to merge with the registry and reboot your PC
