Hi there.
I know very little about web-building but want to register a domain name anonymously. The site is for a charity I'm starting and I'll need my personal details to be private.
Has anyone else done this? I have read that it can be problematic and that registrars can release your details without good reason sometimes.
Are there any companies you would trust?
Have been trawling for hours trying to find a decent answer to this question but just as confused as when I started!
Many thanks.

You actually believe people will trust someone who wants to start a charity anonymously! Come on, what sort of person does that?

Thanks ianm, I appreciate the help.
What are you implying whizwrinkly and fatcontroller?
What do you mean 'what sort of person...'?

Well, I don't know about you, but if I was to get involved with a charity (even just viewing a web site) I'd want to know who and where they were, and if that information wasn't available on the site, or via Whois - with charity reg number, etc, - then I'd think twice about getting involved. And yes, I and others might well think the worse.
There are enough scamsters on the net without giving that impression (unintentionally, or otherwise) to site visitors and potential donors. To deliberately omit or otherwise obfuscate such relevant information would appear, at least, dubious if not underhand, IMO.

I need to keep my details protected because the site would be giving advice/information to help try to stop a particular criminal activity. I could become the target of repercussions if my details were made available.
I would like to register with a P.O box address but it's quite expensive. I'm not highly paid and this enterprise is one I am trying to fund by myself.
Do you think there is no way around it? If I have to pay for a private mail address, I'll do it, I was just trying to find a cheaper alternative.
I can't afford to pay for anyone to create it, so I'm trying to learn HTML but have come up with a name, so wanted to get it registered ASAP, so no-one else can take it.

OK. Well in that case a PO Box is about £1 a week, £2 if you want it delivering to a bricks & mortar address, all will be tax deductible, as will hosting charges, etc. As a registered charity you will be required to present annual accounts, RE sponsors, donations, expenses, and whatnot.
Also as a registered charity your contact details will be accessible from the charities commission so a PO Box is essential before you even begin. Any letterheads are required to have full contact details, charity number, etc. (not sure how that equates to the site) but folk will be able to 'look you up'.
Not sure what the rules are RE PO Box contact info and how accessible that actually is.
As for the name/domain. A .co.uk TLD allows you to withhold registrant details on Whois (but not necessarily the other information), but a PO Box would be preferable anyway in this case. Also, to denote a charitable domain I'd go for a .org, or .org.uk TLD.

Coo. Thank you, Mr. Controller.
So much to think about! I'm wondering whether I should treat it as a charity now. Perhaps I should start it just as an educational/advice website and see how it does.
There must be a way to keep personal details private for individuals wishing to register a charity, though. I can't be the only one who would need to do so. I'll ask about it.
I really appreciate your time. Thank you.

If your new to website building there are a host of content managment systems (CMS) available, these have a control panel where you add your information to the site in a way that means you dont require any html knowledge, my webhost and many others will set these up for you if required, after paying for the hosting are generally all free. Google the following:
Drupal Geeklog Joomla Mambo Open Source PHP-Nuke phpWCMS phpWebSite Post-Nuke Siteframe TYPO3 Xoops

Thanks for this, ianm - any help is appreciated!
I was told that it's worth learning html as it can avoid complications in the future but if it all gets too much for me, I'll try this instead.
Cheers.
