Nortons Firewall (Automatic Update) Nortons Antivirus (Automatic Update) Spybot Search & Destroy (Updated) Ad-Aware SE (Updated) CCleaner (Updated)
Windows (Automatic Update)
WIN-XP V5.1 - SP2 RAM 1.00 GB (2.09 GHz) Capacity: 147 GB Free Space: 127GB (86%)
I hope I'm in the right forum, if not appologies. I would be grateful for your help. I have read in previous posts about computers running slow but I think my problem may different as I am having other problems as well. Below is a list of what has been happening.
I have noticed this week that my computer is running slow, almost to a standstill.
I have over 20 icons on my desktop and each takes over a minute or more to open.
Whenever I try to open Microsoft Office (2000) again it takes up to a minute or more to open.
Every time I click on any document/folder in Microsoft Office, even the ones I’ve had for some time, it requests a virus scan, again this takes forever.
I don’t know if this is related but my wireless keyboard has stopped functioning. (I’m using my daughter’s laptop.) The cursor appears in the document and I can move it around with the mouse, I can also use the mouse in the menu bar etc, but I cannot type anything.
With the keyboard not functioning I cannot sign in to various sites on the net (including WebUser)
On the internet (Orange Broadband) every site and link can take from 5 mins or more to not loading at all. Again I don't know if this related but I cant't get in to my online banking.
I have run AV, Spybot etc in safe mode but this has failed to rectify the problem. I have checked the event viewer logs as recommended by John McKenna and found the following error reports for 26 and 27 Feb: (which I do not understand but hopefully someone in the forums will) I’m also hoping that the following was caused because I was in Safe Mode otherwise I think I have a big problem.
DCOM error: This service cannot be started in Safe Mode, attempting to start the service Stisvc in order to run server.
The following boot-start or system-start drivers failed to load. AFD AMDK7 Fips IPsec MrxSmb NetBT RasAcd Rdbss SYMTDI Tcpip
DHCP Client service depends on NetBt service which failed to start because of the following errors:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
DNS client service depends on the TCP/IP Protocol Driver Service
TCP/IP NetBios Helper service depends on the AGD Networking Support Environment Service.
IPSEC services depends on the IPSEC driver service.
All the above failed to start because a device attached to the system is not functioning.
And finally, I recently installed my daughters wireless connection for her laptop (Belkin)whereas before I would have to login on Orange, I now no longer have to do so because the login window has transferred to my daughters laptop. I don,t know why this has happened as it is my account.
Whenever I want to go online I just click on the IE icon and I am online straight away. Why do I no longer have to logon to my account? Am I constently online and if so is this a security risk. My reason for asking this is that If I am always online then maybe I have picked up a virus that has caused all these problems.
I'm sorry there is so much to deal with but they have all happened at the same time therefore i think they must all be related.
I hope that someone will be able to tell me what the problem is. (In plain English please.)
Thanks for your time. Turlac

OK quite a lot of information here which you've repeated twice elsewhere, it's best not to do that for a couple of reasons, one you may get confused as to where your answer will come from and two it can create repeated answers, thus wasting peoples time.
Norton will be one reason leading to a slow computer, as the program is bloated and there are better programs out there. However lets ignore that fact for the time being, as you will more than likely have paid for it and it's best to see it out before wasting money.
We can eliminate RAM as an issue, as can we eliminate junk on your PC as you have CCleaner and quite a bit of free hard disk space.
I notice you don't mention defragment of your system, have you ran a defrag tool on your PC?
To eliminate the virus scan within MS Word do the following:
1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program.
2. Click Options.
3. In the left pane, click Miscellaneous.
4. In the right pane, under "How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected," uncheck Enable Office plug-in.
5. Click OK
Wireless keyboard issue, consider replacing the batteries, failing that try installing a wired keyboard and see if that eliminates the issue.
Try running your anti spyware programs in normal mode, do you still get the same errors?
It could be that this is all virus/spyware related, so it may be worth considering doing a HJT Log, in the appropriate forum.
Infact run your virus and spyware scans run CCleaner and then defrag your system and then post a log in the HJT forum.

Mouse, Many thanks for getting back to me. Appologies for other postings they were done out of desperation!
My Nortons Firewall/Av is 2003 and I am subscribed till May 2007 after that it is no longer being supported. Can you recommend a Firewall/Av (preferably free).
I tried to defrag a couple of days ago and after an hour it had only defraged 2%. However, I will do a full defrag and get back to you.
I tried new batteries with no luck. Have installed wired keyboard and this works OK - Thanks.
As regards my computer running very slow, Desktop Icons taking forever to open and Microsoft Office requesting a virus scan. If I turn off the Belkin Modem/router everything is back to normal except that I obviously don't have access to the internet.
Do you know what is causing this to happen, my daughter's laptop runs ok when connected to the net. What I can't understand is why my Broadband logon window has transferred to my daughter's laptop and I now do not have to logon to get on the net.
I will follow the rest of your advice. Again thanks.

Mouse, thanks for getting back to me. Sorry about the other postings, done out of desperation.
At the moment I am running Nortons 2003 Firewall and AV and am subscribed until May 2007. After that Nortons no longer provide a service for my version. Therefore I would be grateful if you could recommend a Firewall/Av. (preferably free)
I tried to defrag a couple of days ago and after an hour or so it had only defraged 2% so I gave up. However, I will now do a full defrag.
I tried new batteries and this did not work. I have installed a wired keyboard and this has worked. Thanks.
Regarding the other problems with Ddesktop Icons and Microsoft office/docs and virus scans. I turned of the Belkin modem/router and everything returned to normal except for the fact I can't access the internt.
So it looks like the problem is with the belkin modem, however, I don't understand why this is happening because when my daughter uses her laptop she has no problems when online or using desktop/M-Office and I'm still puzzled as to why my Orange logon window has transferred to her laptop.
Mouse, do you have any ideas as to why this is happening?
I am in the process of following the rest of your advice and once again many thanks.
turlac.
