I am currently having problems with both of my cd-roms, one is a normal 52x cd-rom and the other is a dvd-rw. Basically neither drive recognises when there is a disc in the drive. Im not sure what the problem could be, any ideas?

First thing I do when the CD/DVD ROM drive won't read a disc is (A)use a lens cleaning disc in the drive or(B) clean the disc itself.

Does Device Manager indicate that there is a problem with either or both of your drives? Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware tab, click on Device Manager, then click on the + by DVD/CD-ROM drives, double click on each entry to see if Device Manager shows that there is a problem with either or both drives. If not, you could try clicking on the Driver tab and see if updating the drivers helps. If it doesn't, you can roll back to the previous driver(s).

Hi
I tried what you suggested and It didnt work for me, it said that both cd roms are fine. I could not update the drivers as it looked for a cd to do so and I do not possess one. It also could not roll back as there is not a previous driver to roll back to.
Do you think I should just get a new one or is there a easy way to fix them??
Cheers

I don't know if there's an easy way to fix them. When our DVD-ROM drive stopped working completely a few months ago after intermittent problems for some weeks, we just bought a new one. I don't think it was very expensive, certainly less than £20. In your place, I'd buy new drives. If you need to, you could start a new thread asking for advice on the best ones to get. I forgot to say this before, but welcome to WU!

G'day john_84.
Are both CD and DVD-rw on the same ribbon?. With no CD/DVD in tray is led light(s) on?. Does led light(s) up when CD/DVD is in the tray?
