Hi,
I want to put a simple "radio station" on my website - not a live, streaming one, but a recorded one.
I understand that I can't play whole songs because of copyright restrictions - but what about 30 second clips? I know that many websites use them and I wouldn't mind playing them. Can anyone give me any help.
I want to do this all for free, so Live365 is out of the question.
Also, does anyone know of any (again, free) software that will link together all my clips - songs, jingles and speaking; to make one big sound file that I can link to on my website.
Thanks, hjc. ____________________________________________________________________

Any part of a song (1 sec or 10 minutes) is copyright. The copyright owner may give you permission to use part of their song but you must ask first. The Performing Rights Society will also be looking to receive some money as you will be broadcasting music.

If it is distributed by the major companies, then I advise great caution and deep pockets. I created my first Flash movie which included a 30.1 second clip from a song released via EMI Europe. I did the right thing and phoned them in London, then wrote with details asking permission. They replied saying I should "set aside a significant part of your budget for this".
So, since you are presumably not wealthy, I suggest you try the small or upcoming artists who are independent of the monopolistic companies. They may also wish paying, but are more likely to be gentle on this, if the site is well presented and giving them exposure.
On the question of bringing music together. I have Total Recorder which allows you to splice WAV and MP3 into a single file. My concern however, is that you won't be streaming the music? So when you have your several MB of file, how will overcome the problem of page load delays as it is constantly buffered, especially on older systems, or by users stuck with 56K dialup? That impediment is the very reason streaming was invented to deal with.

Please can I point out something about your site. I don't mean to criticise but the writing is very small, I could hardly see any of it. If you just brought up the size a bit it would help.

I am a young webmaster -so I don't wanna phone up or pay money.
About my website - yeah - i know wot ya mean owen - it's just that i created it with powerpoint - not knowing what a drag it was going to be, so it's a big effort sometimes to edit it.
1 more thing - how come my post's been edit by Fat Contoller? wot was wrong with it?

I would guess that TFC simply created a clickable link to your website to make it easier for all of us to have a look. Us mere mortals have to create another post to put the link in but as he's God he can change yours.

Hi heebiejeebieclub,
It's OK, there was nothing wrong with your post. As greysts said, I '...simply created a clickable link to your website to make it easier...'. Which makes a change as I'm usually beaten to it by one of the regulars helping things along with a clickable link in a post.
And don't worry, if I make changes to the body of a post I always try to advise the poster.

Hi
I've just had a scan round your site and I was very impressed. I found the print size OK and I'm viewing in 1024 X 768. As a matter of interest, why do you want to add background music? I find it a complete turnoff and normally leave the site immediately, as do a lot of other people. If you want some sounds, and your site is about musical exams, what about having sheet music for out of copyright stuff and having a MIDI player to demonstrate what you are looking at? Perhaps some of the classics (Beethoven, Mozart etc.).

That's a good idea, and I know of one American web design career professional who would be very scathing about constant background noise on any site. As he points out, it is the user's experience, so let them make the choices about how they want that to be. An embedded player which can be turned on or off to play samples would cover this well. :)

OK, but wouldn't I have to pay for the sheet music and the MIDI file?
Another thing, how do I create a clickable link - HTML doesn't seem to work

Hi HJC,
I've been sniffing around for relevent info RE MIDI on your site. To date this is the best and most informative page I've found. Although the author decalres; "This article is by no means meant to be official or even to be 100% accurate." However, it does seem eminently sensible
In relation to MIDI files representing the music of, shall we say, the classical composers of yesteryear, it says;
"Nearly ALL the old original classics by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, *etc., are in the public domain. The present day sequencers who record the classics with their own musical talents own the copyrights to their arrangements. Unless you obtain a license and/or permission to use them, you cannot use them. No ifs, ands, or buts!"
* but not Ravel, Tippet, Sargeant, etc.
So, if you sequence your own MIDI file, you own it (although I couldn't see any reference to using published sheet music as a source - perhaps the term "own musical talents" means just that, and not the use of notation from another source!).
