Viewing Video problems
      #331493 - Fri Feb 09 2007 09:31 AM

I am new to looking at videos, on such sites as You Tube etc. So I hope this isn't a stupid question. I find that the clip starts, then stops after a few seconds. It goes on like this and can take forever just to watch a 1 minute clip. Do I need to upgrade anything to correct this? I have XP Home: 512 RAM: Athlon processor 2500+, running at 1830 and video card is RAGE128 PR11

Thanks for any assistance
John

Your internet speed could relate to it as well, you don't mention what connection you have.

It may well be your connection speed. Like you, I live in a rural area and I can only get dial-up at 44Kbps, so even short video clips take ages to load for me. I doubt if you have to wait as long as I do!

Thanks, but perhaps I have not explained fully?
I can put up with waiting for a clip to load, but after it loads and runs for a couple of seconds, it stops again. It is as if you had a DVD on screen and you kept pressing the Pause / Start button.
Also, I can see that it seems to be loading again. Is it Buffering? If so, what do I need for quicker and more efficient Buffering?

Parvenu , it is possible that the you tube servers are extremely busy , but if you have this problem all the time it's more than likely your connection speed ain't quick enough.

I would say so. Buffering in simple terms means a piece of the clip is downloaded to your PC , lets say for example 1 minutes worth. While you are watching this piece another minutes worth is being downloaded. Now in practice by the time you've watched the first piece , the second piece has fully downloaded and they join together to give you have a seamless picture. This process continues throughout the clip to give you a video without any breaks. However if your connection speed is not fast enough you won't have a problem watching the first piece of the clip , but the second piece will not have fully downloaded by the time you've watched the first , causing the clip to appear to stop. Once it's fully downloaded the clip will then start again.
Unfortunately i don't think there's a lot you can do about it.

That's a good explanation and it's exactly what happens to me. However, once the video clip has loaded and I've seen it fits and starts, I can then click on "Play Again", or whatever it says, and the clip plays right through without any stopping.

Thanks for comments. I don't intend to waste anyone's time with this. However, just as a matter of interest, I went on to a music video collection today on my ISP - Virgin. I selected a couple of music video clips and each played perfectly, all the way through !!!

I then tried another site called Wimp. Unfortunately, there are a lot of porn connections on this, although there are also loads of innocent fun videos. I tried a few of these and again, I have this stop / start problem.

I think I will have to put it down as a mystery.

Thanks again for comments.

To check which version of Flash you've got, click here. The latest version is 9,0,28,0.
