DIAL UP CONNECTION SPEED
      #330167 - Fri Feb 02 2007 06:31 PM

Good afternoon friends; I have developed a sudden problem with my DUN connection speed. Computer is Packard Bell Igo 6004, Operating System is Windows XP Home. Modem is a PCI Ambit AC'97, Have updated the driver from PB Site-noted that the driver issue is dated 2002! ISP is BT/TALK TALK and my distance from telephone exchange is less than one mile.
Previously the connection speed was fairly constant at 46.6 Kbps. Without any warning the speed dropped to 45.2 Kbps.
I have tried out one of those trial Internet Automatic Set-up Programmes called "tweak master". They give you 5 options which alters the MTU/TCP etc automaticaly, tried all 5 and no difference in connecting speed.
What could be responsible for this sudden drop in connection speed? I have Nortons Anti Virus/Windows Defender/Adware/Spybot all up to-date and none have detected any spyware/viruses! Could it be that the BT/Talk Talk have adjusted the line levels downwards?
I would be most grateful for any suggestions from the technically aware -
Thank you in anticipation

Hi and welcome to WU. You could try contacting your ISP to see if they have any explanation for the drop in speed. Perhaps BT could increase the gain on your line, that might help. I was once told by BT that the speed that you can expect on dial-up with a 56k modem is anything between 30Kbps to 45Kbps, but no higher. As I live in a rural area a long way from our local exchange, I consider myself fortunate to have a speed of 44Kbps most of the time; sometimes it's 40Kbps and on a really bad day, it's 38.6Kbps, but that doesn't happen very often.

Madeline.

That change is speed is so small as to be unnoticeable. It could be down to something as vague as a change in the weather. I certainly wouldn't waste your time talking to BT as they will give you the same answer, the difference isn't measurable.

You're welcome, but greysts is right, it's a very small difference. On the other hand, it just seems better to have a higher speed. Some time ago, we kept getting 26.4Kbps which did make a small, but noticeable, difference. Although the standard help people weren't much help (not their fault, they can't really do much), we persisted and got our gain increased again, hence the more or less consistent 44Kbps. Contact BT anyway, see what they say and don't forget to let us know how you get on! Hope you have a good weekend too.

Madeline.
