Music echos in all programs
      #329531 - Tue Jan 30 2007 12:31 AM

Hi.
Suddenly, music that I play through any program is full of echo and horrible to listen to. I listen through ordinary headphones. The vocals sound like a stadium sound in all my programs which, in WMP, makes it also sound like a badly-tuned radio. I use iTunes, JetAudio, Winamp, WMP11, RealPlayer and QuickTime. The fact that thay all sound the same suggests to me something other than indivual setiings in each program. Alternatively, maybe one program has changed the others?

I had a dig in each program and turned off any special sound effects but no improvement - just different kinds of awful!

As an aside, I long for a program as easy to use as my stereo with Bass, Treble etc all easy to find.

Any idea what might be wrong? I have a Creative RealTek AC97 Audio device.

Thanks for any help

Do you have a microphone plugged in, or web cam with built-in mic? If so, ensure it is disabled, it could be feedback you're experiencing.

Thanks for responding. The headphones have a microphone built in but it's switched off. I dont have a webcam plugged in (I did use it at the weekend but plugged it out when I was finished.

OK, well at least we've cancelled out any obvious hardware issues.

As a Creative sound card I assume you have some Creative audio software installed. Have you checked all the settings available therein (depending on installation); graphic equaliser, speaker settings, THX speaker console, surround mixer, EAX console(?), etc.

Do you have access to the Creative diagnostics tool? If so, and none of the above proves fruitful, you might want to give it a whirl before seeking out up-to-date drivers and installing them.

Hi paddle9, it's probably clutching at straws but have you checked the sound effect for the actual AC97 audio configuration? You should have a blue square icon with yellow sound waves in your system tray. Click it open and check that the sound tab is selected and the environment look up list is set to "None". I apologise if you included this when you said that you checked the sound effects in the other programs. It's all I can think of at the moment, as I've got those speakers.

Hi, I played around with that and changed the environment setting to <none> and made sure Speaker Configuration is set to Headphones. Now, on some tracks I get loud music and faint vocals making music just about unlistenable.
