Web Design
      #32922 - Wed Jan 07 2004 12:46 PM

Hello,

I am currently designing a web site using Dreamweaver MX. I work using a screen size of 1152 by 864, as I have a big monitor. The problem I have is what is the best size to create my website. Also how do you centre the website so on whatever computer people look at my website it automatically resizes to fit their screen?

If anyone has any suggesstions I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Your best bet if you are using tables tio aid in your design would be to use the width tag as a percentage <table width= X%> where X is a number between 1 and 99

As said, work in percentages. To centre every time, use tags like <DIV align=center>, <P align=center> etc.

Personally I dont like working in percentages, as you'll get one user on a 1600x1400 monitor or something stupid, and they'll complain everything is stretched out..

With fixed widths you know where you are ;)

At IPC we design for 800x600..

I agree Paul. The most common resolution is 800x600 so that is what I work to. When the average resolution increases, so will I.

The only part of my art site that is in percentages is the forums. I use Invision Board and it works very well.

I agree with Paul too and like you say Jonny 800x600 is the commonest size. I've noticed from my stats that any other sizes are in the minority and most of those using XP also have this size. Besides, there is more than enough work goes into a web page without adding more to it just to please a minority.

Thanks for your help guys! I think I will try using the fixed 800 by 600, as I have noticed this seems to be the most common at the moment.

I own my own Business in Web Design and i find that it is always best you design it between the two sizes, i find most websites of any size will fit into a 1000 x 724 reselution so it doesnt really matter, as for 800 x 600 being the popular one just isnt true, i add up all my stats now and again and find that most people have higher screen resolutions but thats just my results. I also advise all my clients to put there screen resolutions up as it is alot easier to surf the net and work with.

Hope this was some help

Craig

I built my first ever web site to 640*480 as that was the norm, but I stopped considering that size a long time ago as the 15" monitor became standard with default 800*600 res. I also remember well what a chore it was to change the fixed sizes in tables etc across the whole site. So now I only fix the width of my menu area to ensure display at the edge, and the rest is percentages to fill the screen.

Today though, I think the trend is heading more your way, as more new comps are being sent out with 17" monitors as standard, and the default setting for that tends to be 1024*768. Working to a preset is all well and good, but when the time to change arrives, you have all that fixing to do.

That's why I said use percentages, so it's one size fits all and will automatically adjust itself to the user's screen size. You still have the option to test run your pages in the resolution of your choice, but why lose the hits/potential customers by ignoring a large portion of the viewing public with fixed sizes that either don't fit the screen, or leave large blank areas to annoy them?

I'll go with paul as well, 800*600 is considered the minmum, and there are problems using fluid layouts (ie using %). Also try and avoid tables for layout an learn css/xhtml.
