DVI graphics card wont work with my monitor

Hi all,

i recently had a DVI graphics card given to me by a friend, and after buying a vga-dvi adpator it still wont work. I know the graphics card is fine becasue when i plug the monitor into the vga-dvi adaptor on it own the signal cuts out. I have a tiny 19" vga monitor, so i dont know what else to do.

Is it a no win thing?
