Finding and reconfiguring a sound card
      #327544 - Fri Jan 19 2007 11:35 PM

Friends, This post is related to another posting further down the list to which I have had no replies, hopefully they can be linked when my PC admits that my sound card is indeed fitted!

I have been experiencing problems with my programming following a Windows update of the driver on my sound card.

Anyway, the system now tells me (Device Manager) that there is a problem with there not being a sound device fitted!

I have only uninstalled the programmes and their folders and then downloaded the original driver from Asus.

Any ideas as to how I get the sound card recognised again?

Peter.

PS. System restore is unlikely to be of much use. Most entries deleted to clean up HD.

Hi PCF Do you know the make & model of your SC or is it part of your MOBO?

Thankyou for your response.

The server is an Asus Barebones Pundit (possibly a hybrid, it was a gift) and I assume that from the website for AsusTek that it is of their design. Apart from opening the server and hopefully being able to find some form of hieroglyphics that refer to the sound card, I have no idea!

I have downloaded their driver but the card is not being recognised as part of the PC!

BTW, what does MOBO stand for?

Regards, Peter.

Hi PTC,

MOBO is short for Motherboard, sorry to cause any confusion.

But now you have me confused! You talk about server? do you mean your PC? is your sondcard seperate or built into your MOBO? Download PC advisor from HERE it will give you a detailed specification of your machine. If you can detail the MOBO or SC spec That would be great.

Regards,

Nick

Ok, looks like it's a MOBO soundcard. Try the driver from HERE yours is the 12th one down the page. Let me know how you get on.

No change!

Reboot made no difference!

Would it be of any use to remove the sound card, reboot, replace card and let the system find it?

Unfortunately your sound 'card' is actually a chip on the motherboard so short of major surgery it cannot be removed. Have you tried looking on the motherboard manufacturers site for the drivers?

Spencer, thankyou for your comment.

In one of my earlier posts I did state that I had visited AsusTek (I have an Asus Barebones Pundit) and downloaded the XP equivalent driver, but it did not work!

In exasperation I have restored at the earliest point in the system but it does mean that I can still only play some of my music (External old hard drive), it will not play a CD, and my microphone(s)are not recognised!

Thanks again, Peter.

PS I did try the download suggested but for some reason it made my PC lock up completely!!! I had to go in in "Safe Mode" (Through F8) which complicated matters somewhat but at least I could remove the programme!!! I will not be repeating the process.

PCF what is the model of your MOBO? Perhaps there is a better driver out there?

Thankyou for your reply, what I do know from the users manual is that it is an Asus Barebones Pundit serial number 48PM047616 .

Again from the manual it tells me that the motherboard is an ASUS P4S8L

Is that of any use?

I have taken a tentative look inside and found 2 slots for expanding the system, should I consider buying a specific sound card to fit into one of those slots?

Regards, Peter.

Hi PCF

I've had a look around, and the soundchip for your MOBO is the Avance Logic Inc AC'97 (These are the drivers on the ASUS website). However, the newest drivers were released by "Realtek" and no longer Avance The newest driver I can find is HERE. Funnily enough, this is exactly the same driver I installed on my re-built system last Friday! It worked perfectly for me, hope you get some joy too.

Regards,

Nick

OK, thanks for that link.

Please tell me now though, do I uninstall everything related to the audio before I install the driver?

At the moment following a " System Restore " and according to the " Add or Remove Programmes " in " Control Panel " I have the programme " Avance AC'97 Audio " and " C-Media WDM Audio Driver ", are these to be uninstalled first?

I ask because I experienced problems removing these programmes when I tried before?

In fact I had to use the " Regsupremepro " to eliminate them totally!

I am beginning to get a little paranoid about the whole thing now!!!

Regards, Peter.

PCF,

I would suggest you keep them for the time being. Download the new driver to a place you remember, and then locate your audio card in "Device Manager" and choose the "Update Driver" option. Locate the new driver, and let it install. If the new driver doesn't solve your problems, you can always go back into Device Manager and use the roll back driver option to get you back to where you are right now. That way, at least you will be where you are now, and other solutions can be explored.

Let us know how you get on?

Regards,

Nick

This is getting ridiculous.

Following your suggestions I have saved the programme to a folder in "Program Files", I have also unblocked the contents.

The Device manager cannot find a sound card and if I select any of the sound programmes (Mentioned earlier) and ask for an update the folder shows as having no contents! At least there is nothing for me to click on as the upodate, the OK button is greyed out and will not respond!

I do have sound because I am listening to music right now, but if I try to configure a new microphone (I have just bought a new one from Staples) still there is no response on the scale!

Regards, Peter.

Do you not have a sound device showing in device manager? Something like THIS

It is there that the new drivers need to be installed.

Yes, but, where yours shows Realtek mine shows Avance.

I have tried to update the driver as suggested but it will not work!

I tried using update driver in "Device manager" and now everything is dead again, cannot even play music!

Now what, "restore point" again?

Peter

Unfortunately I think yes to another restore point, or use the "Rollback Driver" option in device Manager. Sorry that my solution did not work, but it is sometimes a trial and error situation with drivers. I'm a bit stuck for options now, other than your earlier suggestion of purchasing a seperate soundcard. There may still be others on here with other solutions though.

Thanks, "Rollback" did work and at least I can listen while I surf, it just vexes me that the microphone is still inactive, I have so many friends around the world and the Skype arrangement is being neglected!

Hopefully someone else can come with an idea.

Thanks again, Peter.
