A lot of people are getting confused between all these "Messengers" that Microsoft have in Windows XP. The two in particular that people get mixed up between are Windows Messenger and Windows Messenger Service
Windows Messenger- An instant messaging program bundled with Windows XP which is not as secure as MSN Messenger and starts when you start Outlook Express. The same concept as MSN Messenger but not as good. You can download it from Microsoft. It is also used to get Remote Assistance.
MSN Messenger- A brilliant and popular Instant Messaging program that lots of people use available for download from MSN. Much better than Windows Messenger.
Messenger Service- An annoying feature in Windows 2000 and XP that was originally designed for Network Administrators to send messages to users across their Network. Some people have taken advantage of these feature and used it to send advertisements to people connected to the internet. For more information about Messenger Service and some websites that actually offer this software to Spam people visit Grc- Shoot The Messenger. You can also download a small 22KB application that lets you Disable/Enable Messenger Service without any hassle.

Thanks for that link Joe. We followedinstructions to disable Windows Messenger from my son's computer last night and it's still coming logging on, so I think this will be the best way to get rid of it. Thanks again.

I've managed to stop it starting when I start Oulook Express using a plugin for Ad-aware. I'm not uninstalling because I sometimes need it for Remote Desktop Connection and Whiteboard for MSN Messenger. I also use Application Sharing sometimes as well so I need Windows Messenger.

Just a word of warning, you may need it for certain MSN Activities such as Whiteboard or Remote Desktop Connection.

Caroline,
I've copied some more instructions here on this subject that I found. I've used this myself and it can be reversed if you want. This is to do with the "send.net spam if thats your problem. There is also a dos test you can use if you wish. Let me know and I'll post the details if you wish.

Thanks again Joe. His problem is that he wants to use MSN Messenger only and when he logs on to it, Windows Messenger overrides it and opens up even though all the correct boxes have been ticked in the Options to stop this from happening.

It can be infuriating as the Computer appears to have a mind of its own sometimes. I had similar problems when I set things up after a re-install. To resolve the issue I disabled Windows Messenger and subsequently removed it, I then went back to the download site and re-installed MSN. I suggest you follow the instructions to disable Windows Messenger and see how it goes before removing it. As Owen said its confusing with two, or was it three, different versions of the same programme.

3 Versions Joe. You have to read peoples post very clearly because Windows Messenger and Windows Messenger Service are two very different things. I find it easier just to call the annoying spam one "Messenger Service" and the one installed on XP "Windows Messenger"

This is the bit thats confusing me Owen,
"A lot of people are getting confused between all these "Messengers" that Microsoft have in Windows XP. The two in particular that people get mixed up between are Windows Messenger and Windows Messenger Service"
I know about Windows Messenger because when I first installed XP Pro I started receiving messages purporting to be from an attractive Russian nymphomaniac looking for an nice English boy. Unfortunately I'm not English and at my age I'm not much use to her in any event, lol, so, as I said, I deleted Windows Messenger altogether. I then downloaded and installed MSN Messenger and I've had no problems since. I've not seen Windows Messenger Service, is it just a service provided through the Windows Messenger Programme that I deleted or is it a separate programme completely?
Thanks for your patience.
Joe.
