Network surfing difficulty
      #3271 - Tue Jul 22 2003 12:31 PM

I have a home network setup using a Linksys wireless router, all PCs are running Windows XP Pro. The host (which has my Broadband connection attached) and one client pc are connected by cables to the router and the second client is a laptop using a wireless PC card.
The network works fine and I can share files and printers no problem. However, I cannot surf the internet or download mail using Outlook on either of my client PCs, something I used to be able to do until recently (Not sure whether someone or something has been fiddling).
Tne Internet Gateway appears on both client PCs so I know the connection is there and working and I get regular 'New Updates are ready to download' messages, but IE6 nor Outlook are somehow not being able to use it.
I have run the network troubleshooter without success, all IP address settings appear OK and I have pinged all my PCs until they are sore. When I tried to log on to messenger on a client PC, I got an error message saying my proxy settings are missing or incorrect, but all my IP address settings are set to automatic.
Does anyone have any ideas??

I'm not an expert on networking but if you have the IP addressing set to automatic doesn't that mean the clients have to connect to a DHCP server to get a new dynamic IP address? I'm sure I read somewhere that the clients have to have a static address and only the host gets the dynamic address. That could be complete rubbish but it sounds good! Perhaps someone else will join the thread and put me right.

Thanks for that greyst,

I have recently changed from a wired 5-port switch to a new wireless 4-port router, but my broadband modem is a USB one so is still wired direct to my host PC. When I first changed the switches around, everything worked OK (probably because they were the same make and essentially did the same job), I suppose the problem did start when I actually then installed the set-up disc for the router (to prepare the system for wireless usage) which may have told the PCs that the modem should now be connected to my router rather than the host PC which could explain why I can access internet from the host but not the clients.

Hah! Finally, partially cracked it!! Firstly a classic RTFM fault on my behalf! (There was a 3rd page to the manual! - 'How to configure your router'!) I need to configure the router so each PC can 'talk' to it, secondly I really do seem to have to connect my modem to the WAN port of the router rather than through my host PC, which is going to prove rather difficult as it's a USB type! Back to the shop I go!

Geoffrey

Don't you just love it when you get this nice new bit of kit and they say it's definitely Plug and Pray. Let us know how you get on back at the shop.

As an afterthought my NTL Broadband modem has got both Ethernet and USB ports and they gave me cables for both options. I would have thought most of them come with dual ports these days.
