A friend has recently bought an Epson DX4800 combined printer/scanner/copier. Although it scans and copies in a stand alone situation, she is unable to print from the computer. The printer Properties does not recognise her Dell Dimension 500 Computer USB Ports. Consequently, when attempting to print, the cartridges show as a solid grey block rather than the amount of colour contained. She has contacted Epson Helpline but is unable to resolve this. The only thing she has since remembered is that when downloading the printer software, certain Epson profiles could not be downloaded - she has tried this a number of times. She previously had another Epson which worked via one of the serial ports. Any ideas please?

If the drivers software isn't downloading properly, then that's why she can't set up the printer on her desktop. Are you able to download it for her and save to a usb memory stick or write to CD? If so, then she could load the driver and go through the set up to get it working. The Driver is at the bottom of the page. Just select the correct one to download and unzip it to a convenient file for copying.

Thanks for advice. However, when trying this, my computer cut out 3 times. The Windows report said this caused by attempting to download driver.

I'm at a loss to explain this I'm afraid. Those drivers are on the epson website for the express purpose of downloading. I tried them both (for windows) and they downloaded fine for me, so there must be another issue there. Did the PC crash during the download process?
In the meantime, is there a 3rd person who could download the driver for your friend?

G'day Carole.
The download site seems to have a problem. Printer set up you need to go to control panel/Printers and FAXes click on it and then you should see a printer icom click on it with RH mouse button and then click on Properties then ports. Tick USB.

Thanks again,
The USB hub is not listed, however. She has since connected her old printer which used a serial port to the USB connection (had either/or)- the USB still not recognised (listed).

G'day Carole.
I take it your friend is using XP.
Printer set up you need to go to control panel/Printers and FAXes click on it and then you should see a printer icon click on it with RH mouse button and then click on Properties then ports.
There will be a list com1, 2, 3, 4 LPT1, 2, 3, 4, 5 USB1, USB2 click on USB2 or just USB. If you do not get the USB choice then the driver is missing. Reinstall driver. You could get your friend to try the printer on another computer incase the printer USB has a problem.
