Sounds like the discs are dual layer and the drive is single layer. I have a dual layer reader and a ssingle layer re-writer on my machine and it can cause dome problems at times. (daul laye discs hold just over 9 Gig and single 4.7Gig)

that can't be the problem as the DVD drive I'm using is a dual layer drive, and it quite happily reads some dual layer discs, just not others for some reason!

What are the DVD's your trying to view?
What software are you running to view these DVD's?
What's the make and model of your DVD drive?

The drive is a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160H6S and I've got WMP and PowerCinema installed. Some of my DVDs such as Finding Nemo or Something's Gotta Give just don't seem to be recognised by the drive at all, they don't appear in My Computer or anything, the drive does not think there is a disc there at all.

Codec issue?
Try installing The K-Lite Codec Pack

Ok, I think it could be one of two things.
1) There are issues with the discs - Have you tried a different DVD player?
2) The lens needs cleaning - Try a lens cleaner
Just to double check the DVD software isn't an issue (you can always remove if this doesn't help) try VLC Media Player it's known and popular to be able to play any DVD.
Come back to me with an update.
If none of the above work we could look at drivers and firmware.

The discs definitely work in another player, a lens cleaner has made no difference, and the drivers installed are the most up to date available... I wouldn't mind if it were only one or two discs, but there are quite a few it won't read. I've not tried installing that software, but I don't think its a software problem, the computer itself isn't recognising the discs, not just the software I'm trying to run them on.

It's the drive that's not recognising the discs, not the computer.
You could try a firmware upgrade to see if that solves it?
You will need a piece of software called WinRar to open the software once the download is complete.

thanks for all the suggestions, but unfortunatly nothing seems to be working!
if i try installing a firmware upgrade i get the following message:
"No matched drive detected! This utility is only for LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-H6S drive. Detected drives: 4-0-0-0 E : LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160H6S CP91."

You will need to go to HP (Hewlit Packard) at least I did in the US, to get a firmware update. I have the same drive and though it is supposed to be a lightscribe drive, I can get no software to recognize it as such.
They the firmware for the CP version
