i am thinking of buying a western digital 120gb one, apart from the small size and the fact that you don't need a power supply are there any more pros/cons over a 'normal' ac powered one? in general do they have the same sort of life span etc?

I was looking at them Western Digital Passports, they look very smart indeed!
I ended up going for a 1TB My Book Pro II though because I wanted "SPACE".
I think the passports are perfect for notebooks. But I could easily fill one up on my desktop.

i think 120gb would do me fine, well at least for a good few years. i like the idea of the passport type because it's small and you don't need to find another mains socket. just wonder if they work & last well just like other external drives?

Do you get a 3 year warranty on the Passports? I've been looking but cant find info on warrenty - you're get 1 year regardless though, just on other Western Digital drives you get 3 or 5 years. Worth looking into. I would of thought it would be the same though.
I personally have'nt had to use Western Digitals warranty yet so can't comment if their easy to deal with but as far as I'm concerned they are a very good hard drive manufacturer and well known for it.
My external 1TB has thermostatic controlled cooling although the noise from the fan is unreal, its like a jet on you're desk. I notice the Passport is an encased type, one of the reasons it would be slim and designed for mobility from place to place.
I would of thought it would have a long life unless it was being put under heavy use. I notice the drives on mine get pretty warm from backing up.
Another similar sized drive which may interest you is this one I only thought i'd post it here as I noticed the good reviews. Maybe something to compare. I see the only real issue with BUS powered drives is if you're PC is powerful enough to power it, I'm sure it will be.
