Power to monitor but no power to tower
      #324232 - Wed Jan 03 2007 09:03 AM

Please help,
when i was last on my pc, i smelt burning then few minutes later the pc shut down. After leaving for a while tried turning it on. The monitor light comes on but no light on tower, the switch seems to be ok, no sound coming from tower or fans, theres just no power at all!

If you have any ideas please let me know and roughly how much this problem is gonna cost me and would it be easy to fix myself!

Thanks Eve

Sounds like the Power Supply Unit has gone. They're not too expensive and relatively straight forward to replace if you feel confident enough taking the side off and looking.

All the cables can only fit one way so, as long as you get the correct one, you should be able to do it.

Have a look for some prices here

Don't worry if you get one that has higher output than yours. The PC takes the power it needs.

Thanks for your reply.
I did think of the power supply, but wasnt sure as the monitor gets its power from the tower and the monitor light comes on!

The part that supplies power to the motherboard could be faulty, but the other bits work OK.
