happy new year all, would have been on earlier but couldnt get signed in properly?
any way my first problem for the year and probably not the last.
its my msn messenger again i know i posted a few months ago about this problem but its still not sorted so here goes.
when i get new contacts come on line or recieve any meesages from them i have no alert noises they used to be there but not now all relevant boxes etc are checked and cant seem to solve this.
i also went to open another user account on my computer and the alerts worked fine on that one so please someone HELP ME!!

If you've ticked all the check-boxes in the Options General Tab then it should work, Click on the "Sound Button" on the right and see how that is set up.

What seems strange is that when you're signing in with a different user name, you're still using the same version of MSN Messenger. So pretty weird that one user name has the sound alerts and the other doesn't. Have you tried uninstalling and downloading again? Can't say it will remedy your problem but maybe worth a try.

Hello there is right, I also wondered about that. I think we're just going through the possibilities here. Have you clicked on the sound button as I said. It should give you your sound level settings etc. You could also run the sound wizard in the tools dialogue and check that out. Also what happens if the firewall is turned off? Just one final thought, where did you install MSN Messenger e,g, which folder and drive or did you install from the download site?

Just checked my MSN Alerts list. All except the second box is ticked on mine.
If my contact's box is open on my desktop, I don't get a sound alert if they send me a message, I only "hear" them if the conversation box is minimised. Also, if a contact is blocked, I don't get any kind of alert when they come online. This probably isn't what's happening with your MSN, but just another thought.

As it works in one user account and not in another it could possible be a registry problem. Perhaps someone else has experienced this?

thats the same as mine hello_there, i never had this problem with messenger version 6.0, also another thing if its related ot not ive noticed when i sign into my xp user account that i dont also have that windows start up noise you no the one i mean and no shut down noise but all sounds etc work on the guest account. i have tried many times re installin and it was from the site you said maybe ,something has been deleted when not supposed to have been but maybe not i dont know its strange even when unistall and reinstall it still the same something not right somewhere me thinks.

try going to control panel/sounds speech audio devices/change sound scheme. and scroll down to msn messenger and make sure the sounds have a speaker beside them.

ive already done that bricat and and they all have speakers beside them , i can even hear what it sounds like if i click the play sound button how frustrating is this , if i had hair i would be pulling it out by now.

Can I throw in some thoughts? From your description of the problem and the fact that you are able to use the programme properly using a different account it sounds as if your User Profile has got corrupted in some way. Although it's going to cause you a lot of work I reckon the only way out of your problem is to delete your own User Account and create a new one. Before you delete you need to create the new account and put it in the Administrator group, log on to this new account and set it up the way you want it. Make sure Messenger works (and all the other things) and then, if you wish, you can delete the old account. A lot of grief I know just to get sounds in Messenger but I don't think there is another way.

i think that is my only soultion greyst, is there any way of tranfering progrmmes and pictures and docs etc etc to the new user account?

Using the Administrators Account you should be able to drag all your stuff across to the folders in the new account. It would be nice if someone could suggest a registry tweak for you to save all the work though but unless they do, as Greyst says there is no other way.

I think Joe's suggestion is the best one. I suppose you could find a registry tweak that moved things from one profile to another but you would probably end up moving whatever is causing your problem into your new profile and you're back where you started. Just a thought, be careful when you start drag & drop. You want to COPY files not MOVE them. This is only a precaution so that if things do go wrong you can at least go back to your original profile without a problem.

Your last point is indeed a very important one Greyst. Never burn your bridges until you're sure you don't want to go back. Unfortunately in computing some of us, including yours truly, learn the hard way.

well thanks all for your help, i have decided to open a new user and my wife is goin to have the old one for her collage work etc so it shouldnt be that bad i hope thanks again.
