They're probably best checking out PC World then, although I don't normally recommend them, as it's shop it's probably the best solution, whereabouts does this person live?

If your mate see's something he/she'd like at PC world, then it's often cheaper to buy it online but collect if from the local store.
Look at their website, you'll often see 2 different prices.

He did buy one from pc world but the guy wasn't very helpful.when my mate asked about the warranty he was told he would have to deal direct with the manufacturer so i questioned this as pc world are the reseller(sale of goods act) and he was quite blunt in his reply that it was not pc worlds responsibility.he then tried to sell him norton s anti virus so i advised my friend of free alternatives which i have used myself (avg being the obvious one) and again his answer was baffling in he said more or less that the warranty would be void as he didn't have nortons. So could someone tell me if i'm right with regards to the warranty or not.personally i found it a very off putting experience(and i'm no novice with 6 years experience and a little knowledge) and even though the first pc i purchased was via them i will stick to the local pc guy i use who is helpful and even though it may cost a little more i'm more than happy using.

You are quite right, the Sale of Goods Act makes it quite clear that the responsibility lies with the retailer. Your contract is with them, not the manufacturer. The crap about Norton is exactly that, crap.
I would be asking to see the store manager and get him to put in writing what you've just been told. Then nip down to Trading Standards with said letter and see what they have to say about it.
Then take your money and buy your goods anywhere except PCWorld.
