Hi I am using XP Pro and find that quite often icons are missing from the task bar eg AVG,Volume speaker, and Mailwasher has just started doing it. The task bar properties are set not to hide inactive programs. Xp is up to date. I tried running sfc /scannow but it didn`t find anything.
Thanks for any help.

Do you mean the system tray, near the clock?

When these icons don't show in the system tray, it doesn't necessarily mean that they haven't loaded up.
Can you confirm that this is the case?

Hi Mouse
Yes you are right when I try to restart Mailwasher in "all programs" it says it is already running, and with AVG if I right click anything and scan it with AVG it then usually puts an icom on the task bar. So I think its just the icons that don`t load. Thanks for the reply.

You could try a right click on a blank area on your taskbar, not the system tray and go to properties then remove the tick from "Hide inactive icons" it may help.
Failing that:
CTRL+ALT+DEL to get up task manager. Click on "Processes" tab Highlight the "explorer" process Click "End Process"... this will stop your desktop. Click on "Applications" tab Click "New Task..." Type "explorer" and click OK

Hi Mouse
The "hide inactive icons" box was not ticked, I followed your advice in task manager and will see how it goes (they are all showing at the moment)
Many thanks for all your help.

I get this, but only occasionally. One of the icons will fail to appear in the Notification Area; I've found that logging off, which takes me back to the Welcome screen, and then logging on again invariably sorts this out.

Thanks Madeline
I haven`t tried that but hopefully having done what Mouse told me it won`t happen again.

I hope not, it's a useful tip for me too. Incidentally, you should be able to get Task Manager by right clicking on the Taskbar and then clicking on Task Manager, although Ctrl+Alt+Delete is the only way on the odd occasions when everything freezes, including the mouse!
