Any error messages when burning discs?

Launch Nero Start Smart, click on the arrow to the left of the window.

Click on Tools then Nero CD-DVD Speed and do a transfer rate test on a known good CD.

Post back the result.

Also check you DMA setting for the drive using Nero Infotool.

only error message is "burn process failed" after 45 minutes trying to burn 2 gig of data.
cant seem to get these nero tools working, it keeps crashing.
i think it may be something more sinister tho, as today when i was booting up at the start of the boot process when your system displays loads of data i noticed where it says primary drive, slave etc. there was a load of random symbols, so i reset it and next time it said the name of my dvd drive.

Did you fit the drive yourself?

Ask your friend to take a look at it for you, there could be a few reasons why you're having problems with the drive.

If he can't do it, then you would need to give it a crack yourself.

G'day mickreid.

I would change the ribbon cable to see if that makes any difference and also check that the 4 pin power connector is making contact properly (some don't).
Try the DVD in another PC if still the same take it back to retailer and get an exchange unit.
