Friends, I do not express myself very well but I have XP Pro with SP2.
Recently (4 days ago) "Automatic Updates" (it is on the recommended setting) informed me that there were 2 awaiting my downloading. On shutdown this is precisely what the system did!
Now every time I boot up I am told that there are 2 updates for me to download which are the same downloads that were installed previously. I know they are installed because if I go to Control panel, Remove programmes etc. and include updates they are shown as having been installed!
The 2 updates have the titles MSXML 4.0 (KB925672) and MSXML 4.0 (KB)927978).
I have visited the MS site for updates and it tells me that there none for my system, that all the critical updates are downloaded!
Is there something I should be doing to make the system recognise that they ARE installed and that I need no more reminders?
Your assistance would be gratefully received,
Regards Peter.

Go into the Control Panel > Add/Remove > Un-install the updates. Auto Update will detect they are not on your System and will go through the download process again.
Hopefully they will install this time. It's worth a try.

Sorry Steve, it makes no difference.
The reminder and the little shield still appear and at shutdown it asks me to select either download or non download?
Thanks for the suggestion.
Regards Peter.

You could try resetting the automatic updates. Click on start > right click on my computer > properties > automatic updates > put a tick in the turn off automatic updates" box > apply > OK. re-boot your PC and reverse the procedure.

Thankyou for the suggestion.
It had no effect whatsoever. I followed your instructions to the letter and the shield and update warning have returned.
Where do we go from here?
Regards, Peter.

Just to be sure they are fully installed click on start > all programmes > windows updates > in the left pane click on "review your update history" and check the status of the two updates in question. If , as expected , they are both green try choosing the "non download" option at shut down.

Update history states that both updates were successfully installed: 9 times on 18th. December by Automatic Update 2 " " 19th. " " " " 2 " " 20th. " " " " 2 " " 21st. " " " " 2 " " 22nd. " " " "
Every update was successful!!!???
Strange?
At this moment in time I am always using the "non download" option ever since this started!
Regards Peter,.

Peter , there is a possible fix.... here. Similar to Fusion's suggestion but different in the manner which the updates are to be uninstalled. Worth a bash i think........at present i don't have any other suggestions.

Fifeflyer, the information from the Egg Head Cafe worked brilliantly and all my updates are correct at the time of writing.
Thankyou for the information.

Great stuff Seems like Fusion wasn't too far of the mark.
Delighted that you're sorted and thanks for letting us know.
