Hope you guys can help. A friends PC is not showing the Cd / DVD rom in windows or the Device manager. The draw opens and closes but that is it. As far as the computer is concerned the rom drive is not there?????
I Have tryed unplugging the ribbon lead etc and re-conecting in the hope the pc reads it and re-instals it but nothing.
Any sugestions would help greatly. Thanks guys.
P.S. Im a new member here so i hope i have posted this in the right forum. And if i dont reply right away it is because i have gone to work ,but i will reply.

Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in either My Computer or Device Manager :-
Start, Run, type regedit and navigate to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them. Close regedit and restart the computer.
If in doubt backup the registry first (Win98) or make a restore point in WinME and WinXP.

Have you made any hardware or software changes on your computer recently that might have caused this issue?

Thanks for that, but i did try doing that and it made no difference. (Mind you, there was no Lowerfilters there just the upper filters)
I am not thaat great a tech head, but i know a little basic stuff. Any other ides it could try guys????
And no, as far as i know my friend has not taken anything off the PC. And definitely no burning software.
Thanks

It's strange that only one of the keys was present! Did you delete it?
If the drawer is opening/closing it means it's getting power. The only other thing I can suggest is checking that the ribbon cable is firmly pushed in, or perhaps try another cable.

I will take another look at the upper and lower filters. But like i said, only the upper filter was there. And as far as the ribbon goes, i did check the ribbon as that was the second thing i tried.
I will get back to you after i have tried it.
Thanks mate.

Do the drives show in the BIOS?
Tap the F2 or Del key as the computer starts to get into BIOS. See if they've been disabled somehow.
If they don't show in BIOS, make sure the ribbon cable is connected properly at both ends, particularly the motherboard.

I`ll take a look in bios and RE-check the ribbon cable. I will get back to you with the result.
Thanks
