If it's to check on someone else's IP, here's one:
All Nettools
PS - I'm not sure if you meant that you had an IP address that you wanted checking out, so apols if this isn't what you're looking for.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear in my original post. Yes I want to be able to pinpoint someones location by their ip address. I've seen a couple that show which city but I want more accuracy if possible.

I've just checked the first one I came across via Google, and it tells me I'm in Holland?.......572 miles from where I actually live. mmmmm, I'm sure there must be more acurate ones....

Presumably the only way such software would work is if your ISP is willing to give that information away. I have a dynamic IP address provided by NTL's DHCP server and the IP licence only lasts for an hour. I would be somewhat concerned if NTL were offering a location address based on my IP. To do so would be driving a coach and horses through the Data Protection Act.

I must have used the same one as you Oracle because I appear to be living in Holland as well!
Greysts, thanks for the info.

I just tried GeekTools on my own IP and it came back with the fact that it was part of the NTL batch of numbers assigned to the Colchester server which I suppose is as good as it gets 'cos that's where I live.

I tried Geektools and it came back with the Preston batch of BT IP addresses when I live 30 Miles Away. Not to bad.
It also said I was on Dial Up. I'm on broadband Geektools.

Who's your ISP? Energis may be a parent company.

That's as accurate as anyone gets. The IP assignment will only identify, at best, the city location of the intitialising server which picks up your connect request ("broadcast shout"). The rest, as stated already, would be a breach of data protection, and a threat to personal safety.
I would be suing my ISP if they started handing over my real life address to any faceless entity which asked for it. Quite simply, you do not have any right to such sensitive information, such is reserved for government agencies, and then only on issue of the appropriate court order.
If you need this because somebody had abused your site, then contact the ISP indicated from your whois search of IP address, who will then take whatever action is appropriate against the user.

ENERGIS are part of (truth!) British Gas!! And yes, they have got into the broadband scene. Where's there's profit.... However, like many who've jumped onto the bandwagon, they simply buy bulk bandwidth from a REAL internet/telecomms provider.
