Just checked my website and its got a lot of mistakes. I haven't got a clue how to correct them. That site scares me.

I know what you mean Owen, today I ran the web pages through Validator that I have painstakingly put together over the last 6 months, and the errors it's coming back with are unbelievable. Not that I can understand what they all mean. Your site looks ok..........can't see any obvious errors?? What's going on? I'm in two minds whether to go ahead and publish them.

Go ahead and publish your pages. Don't take too much notice of the report. It will show up any little inconsistency, but that doesn't mean your pages are wrong. I have a couple of images that are not important and only part of the design, but it throws up these as problems simply because there isn't an ALT attribute to them.

You have to get everything Perfect HTML one < or > out of place and its not valid. The problem is, if you get too many mistakes your website won't work in all browsers. Internet Explorer is quite kind and doesn't mind a few mistakes but other browsers show the page incorrectly if yo have mistakes. For example, the alignment of one of my alerts boxes isn't correct in Opera. I have Opera, Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firebird and Mozilla on my computer so that I can check my website in each one.

I agree with everyone here. The W3C's validator is thorough and that's a good thing. But go ahead and post your site - you'd be surprised how many sites out there don't validate and it's certainly not the end of the world. Then, when you've got a bit of time, go back to the W3C site and do some research on the error messages you get and tighten up your site as you go along. You could always try asking for specific advice on this forum if you get stuck. Good luck.
