I used to be able to make cut outs i.e. pics of objects with no background so that word would flow around the shape pf ythe object, but now I keep ending up with a square pic, forgotten how to do it, I have serif, Adobe photoshop and roxio. help please

In what format are you saving your images? I think only PSD formats allows you to use exact cutout.

You need to use a .gif image with a transparent background.
Then in Word, open the document required > Insert > Picture > From file > Browse to the location of the gif.
Now right click on the gif > Format picture > Layout > Select 'Tight'/OK > And you should be able to move the image around your document and get something like this . . . . . >> Text Wrap .

Thanks fusion that looks like what I want I'll give it a try I knew there was an easy way, all the tutorials went through using channels and paths etc in photoshop, whuch I am learning so expect more questions!!

That is what I want but I must be being extremely dense, I open up a jpeg in photoshop delete the background, save as a transparent gif, insert into word but pic still comes out as a rectangle so when I set to "tight" text wraps around the rectangle not the shape, pic seems to retain a background, I have also opened a new blank canvas with transparent background and dragged a cut out to that saves as transparent gif same result! Ditto in powerpoint. I feel pretty stupid that I can't figure this out. Fusion your example is exactly what I am trying to acheive.

Ok lets try from scratch.
You need an image with a defined odd shape for best results when the back ground is removed.
Open Photoshop, and open your chosen image. If it is in a jpeg format you can use different ways to remove the background. I have used the Magic eraser tool on this occasion at the bottom of this image. Versions of 5.5 and above has this option.
Use the E key to select the magic eraser if previously selected.
You will have to try different tolerances to achieve a 'clean' removal.
If any of the background is left in the image, it becomes part of that image and the defined shape wanted isn't achieved.
Save as (format) CompuServe GIF
Open your document in Word as before > Insert > Picture > From file > Browse to the location of the gif.
Now right click on the gif > Format picture > Layout > Select 'Tight'.
Further settings can be seen in the 'Advanced' section and experimentation with the 'Wrap Text' and 'Distance from text' options making a difference.
However, the document itself will have different results on different images inserted. If you have very long words in the area of insertion, the 'wrapping' will not appear so 'tight' as it would break the words apart making them unreadable if this happened.

Thanks again, I was getting so frustrated as I was doing exactly as you said and I had done this before, I was making a very stupid error, when checking text would wrap I was just holding down a key e.g. bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb with no spaces so of course text would not wrap! I read and reread your post and suddenly eureka it came to me what a stupid berk I had been. Thanks for your patience. Reviewing your site you may like this Here

Homer, thanks for providing that link to the airiel photography, I think next to studing maps, airiel photography comes a close second.
