On my new sony laptop with a fully upto date XP i have a strange menu on the left handside of the desktop. it includes the following
Folder Tasks Rename This Item Move This Item Delete This Item
Other Places My Documents Shared Documents My Newtwork Places Details
Tis menu is locked into the desktop and i cant right click on it to do anything with it. I cant move it or resize it.
Can anyone tell me how to turn the darn thing off.
Its driving me insane and the guys at sony have been about as usefull as a chocolate tea strainer.!
Your frustratedly

Try Right clicking an empty part of your Task Bar > Tool Bars > Note what you have ticked > Un-tick everything and see what happens. You can always re-tick the items you want such as the Quick Launch Tool Bar.

Can you place a image of it over here, to get an idea of what exactly you are talking about. Will be useful to resolve the issue. Thanks.

WebKing is asking if you can take a screen shot and post it on the forum so we can see exactly what the menu looks like.

That sounds like the Common Tasks bar. Does it look anything like this?
If it does, it sounds like there's a problem with your system because that bar isn't supposed to appear on the desktop.

You are correct that this menu shouldn't appear on the Desktop. I'm not convinced that it is actually appearing there though. I think chrissyboywonder has misunderstood what the Desktop menu is and it's location.
If chrissyboywonder wants to change the more modern view to the old classic view, do as follows:
Open your Control Panel > Folder Options > General > Tasks > Use Windows classic folders.
Or whilst in a folder:
Tools > Folder Options > As above.
This will stop the folder tasks from showing.

Hmm I do think the same. He might be considering "desktop" as the screen of windows explorer. Now only chrissyboywonder can take us out from this puzzle, confusion.
Nice image of yours, fusion, loved it. Thanks

Sorry for the confucion, picture is now shown.
It might be something to do with the fact that control panel/folder options is not available, when i try and open the link in conrol pnel nothin happens. I can access it via a folder ie. tools/folder options but i think that he desktop problem may be linked to this in someway.
Regards
Chris

It's really strange Chris. Even if I want to have that on my desktop, not getting it!
BTW, as you said, "you can access it via a folder ie. tools/folder options"
As suggested by Mr. Fusion, did you try the option "Use Windows classic folders"?

Download this fix in this link . . . . . >> Remove Common Tasks from Desktop .
That should do the trick.
Please accept my apologies regarding implying you didn't know your own Desktop.
