No CD drives
      #320669 - Mon Dec 11 2006 04:29 PM

Both my CD and CD/DVD burner drives have suddenly decided to stop working, they spin up and both trays work but neither drive shows up in My Computer nor do they run discs, I checked in Device Manager and both drives are shown but with a yellow disc and black exclamation mark prefix, Device Properties says that 'Windows loaded the drivers but failed to find the device' (Code 41), I also have a virtual CD drive on my hard drive and this is flagged the same way, I suspected a 'bug' but after running AVG, Spybot and Adaware they showed nothing, can anyone please help, I'm running Windows XP Home SP2.

Tony.

Try deleting the drives in Device Manager then reboot the PC. Windows should reinstall them for you.

Do the drives show in the BIOS?

Sorry about the delay in answering, yes the drives show in the bios, its as if 'something' is disabling them because the virtual CD drive is also shown with the yellow disc/exclamation mark symbol.

Did you install any burning program recently? How many and which burning programs you have installed on your PC?

What's this 'virtual' CD drive?
