My XP login screen lists all the user accounts and displays for each the number of programs running and emails outstanding (the latter appears to be incorrect unless I have an email account I don't know about and the emails are occasionally read by an unknown user). Is it possible to stop the login screen displaying information about programs and emails? Better still can user accounts be omitted from the screen but still be accessed when required?

This link to a program called TweakUI should sort your email problem out if not the others.
Best of luck.

As Fusion has said, get Tweak UI. When you've got it, click on the + next to "Logon", then on "Unread Mail" and make sure that "Show unread mail on Welcome screen" is unticked, click "Apply" and "OK". You can do this just for yourself or for all users on your PC.

Done that. Thanks, it works fine for emails. I also notice that it is possible to remove users from the login screen without deleting them. Is there then a way of logging in to them i.e. without going via the login screen? [I note that it is possible to switch between users who are logged in via the Task Manager.]

A quicker way is to press the windows/L keys.

Well, not entirely. I'd still like to have an "invisible" user account if that were possible. The PC is to be relocated to an area for public use in my business and I would find this feature useful, though I'm not sure it can be achieved. Anyway, thanks for helping solve the initial irritation.

It may well be possible to do this, but I don't know how!

The solution seems to be to use TweakUI and un-tick accounts in the logon section so they don't show on the logon screen and reverse this when access is required. It's OK if access isn't needed too often as it doesn't take long. It would be nice to have a hotkey solution or macro of some kind but if that's possible I don't know how to do it.

That didn't occur to me as I wouldn't need to use it, but I'm glad you've found a way of doing it.
