Had to reformat my E drive due to it being infected with a virus, the problem is that the E drive seems to have disappeared when I look in "My Computer". I can find it in Systems & BIOS. I have tried to use "Add Hardware", but that also detects it & informs me that the device is working ok. Anyone.....?

Is is another hard drive or a partition?
Right-click My Computer > Manage.
Click Disk Management on the left side, and all disks should show in the right pane. You may have to scroll down.
Your drive may show as 'unallocated'
Right-click on it and Format.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

Very strange.
What is it? A separate hard drive?
Is it set to slave?

Maybe a virus still exists?

Could be that Windows needs to be jolted into believing the drive is still there. Try removing the power lead and IDE cable from the missing drive then reboot the PC. Check the BIOS to make sure the drive isn't listed. Then switch off, reconnect the cables and see if Windows sees the drive again.

Have disconected my E.drive, (removed both cables that were connected to the back of it) & restarted the pc. Bios still showed that it was there whilst in system, did not register it. Turned off pc & reconnected cables, Bios still showed my E. drive was present & so did system, but disk management did not show it. ( didn`t check to see if disk management registerd it when I had the cables disconnected). What else can I do?

There's something mightily wrong if the BIOS still sees a drive that isn't physically connected to the motherboard. Can you disconnect it again and then copy out the information about hard disks as shown on the BIOS screen. Another option might be to take a picture of the screen and then copy it here.

Sorry, my mistake, seems like I looked in the wrong section of the Bios. I checked the Bios again & it does show up when my E: Drive is connected & doesn`t show up when it is disconnected.

OK so the BIOS is happy. Can you just go over again where in Windows you can and can't see the drive.

Cannot see the drive when I go to My Computer, only shows my C Drive. In Device Manager, under disk drives there are 2 items, the 1st & 2nd being: IBM-DTLA-307030 (My C Drive) WDC WD1000BB-32CCBO (Assuming that is my E Drive). But if I right click on My Computer, & go to Manage & Disk Management, it only shows my C Drive & my 2 x cd rom devices. Appreciate your replys as I`m a bit confused as to what is going on.

I had a similar issue with my PC not seeing ipods and USB sticks, effectively another sort of e-drive. If you right click "start" and go to "explore", does the e-drive show up somewhere on the tree? In my case it did, and I could get to it by clicking there. At some later time the ipod and/or USBs would reappear in "my computer", but not always.
It may not work for you but would be worth looking.

You said you have C: drive with 2 other CD-ROM drives could be D: and E: OR are they using some other letters? When did you see your e: drive in working condition last time? I hope CD-ROM is not clashing with it?

I have a D. drive, which is my internal CD ROM & a F. drive which is my external DVD-RW. The last time that I saw my E.drive was about a couple of weeks ago before I reformatted it due to it being infected with a virus( think that I may have cleared the virus) Could not format it using Windows, so I downloaded a program from www.killdisk.com. But I know other other people have lost items on the pc & thought maybe that this is a glitch with windows xp.

May seem like a daft question, but is the main HD set to master?
Have you checked you BIOS settings? You may need to enable RAID configuration, although you'renot actually using RAID.
