chinese puzzle
      #319449 - Tue Dec 05 2006 07:47 AM

hi all
a friendo of mine went and bought a nice, shiny new p.c. with windows media centre installed (in English) the day after its delivered her brother installs a *chinese* version of windows on top the English version, so he can use it (English isn't his preffered language).

Now the computer isn't working (lockups, restore not working..he turned it off) and the only way I can see to fix it is if I wipe the machine and start again.

But how? I can't use a floppy as there's no floppy drive installed and I tried putting an English xp cd in (and it was ignored...even though i changed the bios to boot from cd) I'm waiting for pc world to deliver a restore disk (up to 28 days, so it's probably going to be the new year) so if anyone has any ideas on how to proceed I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks

When the PC was delivered it should have come with instructions on how to restore the PC to 'factory gate' conditions. This normally means using a Windows image stored on a protected partition of the hard disk. Were any such instructions received?

quick update, they rang them up this evening so i and went round as they'd located the manuals and only to find they used a someone else's utility disk and wiped windows off the pc, I rang pc world's tech people for advice on how to now access the partition as the manual said go via windows and they said that the chinese version of windows would overwrite the english version even in the hidden partion. so the upshot is they gotta spend £30 to get the cd's so i can re-install and setup an acct in chinese, whilst leaving a admin acct in english. so thanks for your help greyst, if i have anymore problems when the cd arrives, i'll pop a post though i hope i don't need to.

I hope they are coming across with a bottle or two for your time.
