I have the same problem on two new keyboards. A bog standard UK keyboard with the number keypad on the rhs,"Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard", and another usb wireless keyboard of similar layout "Logitech HID-Compliant Keyboard". The NUM key is on at bootup but the number keys will not work. With the NUM key off the alternative keys do work! I have tried setting XP to 'English keyboard' and 'English extended keyboard" neither help. Any ideas would be welcom to solve this.

The NUM key is designed for that very reason, so you can use the keys for numbers or as alternate arrow keys. However I don't think you'll be able to alter if the NUM key is enabled at startup. If I remember rightly, it's built into the hardware of the keyboard.

Ok, the NUM pad is intended for numbers with the LOCK set ON. I want these numbers back! There is no reference to NUM pad in the Bios although it is set ON on bootup.
When the LOCK is OFF the keys work as intended(up,down, left, right). Something is bugging the keyboard after a reformat and XP SP2 installed. Help appreciated.

All solved. Easy fix
hit SHIFT key five times in rapid succession, choose 'Settings' Mousekeys/ off
Mouse keys are not on the mouse but are the alt keys on the num pad, don't set them to ON with the NUM lock.

Heaven to have my Numpad back!
